Adventures in Japan

A Few Lessons from ARI. I’m back in the USA. I’ve been dwelling on my time in Japan. My next few posts will be dedicated to these thoughts. For the moment, I’ll deviate from my standard “farm lessons” to talk about how my world has changed since ARI…. 1) Food is sacred. You are perhaps saying, of course, thousands of children are dying in Africa right now! But, even if you say that, you probably didn’t finish your dinner last night; let food rot in the fridge; wasted something because you didn’t like it.

Lessons in Agriculture | Adventures in Japan

A Few Lessons from ARI →. The first of many to come! It’s a long post- hope you enjoy! There are many types of fertilizers (and things people think are fertilizers). Here are some of what we use to fertilize the plants:. 8211; Manure shouldn’t be used immediately. It should be set aside for several months, otherwise the nitrogen is too strong and can burn the plants. 8211; See Rice Husk Charcoal below. 3) Rice Husk Charcoal. Abbreviated to RHC, it is made by piling it around a small fire and smoked until...

Setting chairs in rows for a ceremony*. O- [Japanese- Staff]: *Sets a chair behind a wall beam*. Me: I don’t think the person will be able to see what’s going on. O- : Well, maybe they are tired or do not want to pay attention. I think it will be okay. Rice is on its way! We planted the rice seeds today. It was difficult work, but we got done one day ahead of schedule. Hooray! Here’s a look at what we’ve done:. Laying out the soil. Laying the seeds in the greenhouse. Time Out for Thailand, pt. 2: The Way Home. Note: I’m no longer in Thailand- back in Japan! But I wrote my thoughts on the train to the airport, so I thought I’d share them. Please look over the weekend for my first post about volunteer work at the Asian Rural Institute! Udon Thani is one city away from the border with Laos. It reminds me of Mongolia in so many ways, particularly in the way that construction of new buildings is ongoing while unfinished projects and empty shells dot the landscape. There a...

Out to Eat | Adventures in Japan

What’s in a name… →. Every time I cough in public, I get the idea that the quarantine police will show up. Many people here live behind a face mask to prevent the spreading and catching of germs. I understand why, but I get the feeling I’m constantly watched with the intention of shunning if I make any movement that could possibly spread germs. Yesterday Nate took me to this AMAZING sushi bar (or buffet? I’ve never seen anything like it! It rolls around on a giant conveyor belt. Octopus is a bit chewy.

Time Out for Thailand- Part 1, Bangkok | Adventures in Japan

What’s in a name…. Time Out for Thailand, pt. 2: The Way Home →. Time Out for Thailand- Part 1, Bangkok. There are certain things I try to do in every country that I think adds to the success of a trip: the first is to find a partner with whom adventure and shenanigans can occur. After all, as my most recent travel companion said to me after a funny occurrence: Who could you have possibly shared that with [if we were traveling solo]? Or a case of food poisoning. In Mongolia, amongst other things- turns i...

The London Chronicles | Adventure!

February 1, 2010. Cambridge and the former ambassador to America. Posted by Hannah under Uncategorized. We took the train to Cambridge last Friday to tour the University and Fitzwilliam Museum. The Fitzwilliam was absolutely breathtaking. While it is relatively compact, it had the most aesthetically pleasing interior I’ve ever seen. (Pictures will be uploaded to Flickr soon! It was, itself, a piece of art. The displays were great as well! January 25, 2010. Posted by Hannah under Uncategorized. Other then...
