What is the Abyss? Scattered Thoughts: Pacifism, Bonhoeffer, the Move. Greetings to those who occasionally visit my Abyss. Amidst the frenzy of our move and all of the emotions we experienced in picking up our lives and going to Georgia, and as I have attempted to develop a routine for writing sermons (which, now that I have time to do it right, I am actually enjoying again), I have had some random thoughts to share. My pacifist friends will be proud of me, I hope! One of my favorites:. The voice of the ...

Approaching the Abyss: Please Pray!
http://approachingtheabyss.blogspot.com/2009/04/please-pray.html
What is the Abyss? Unfortunately, as is completely obvious I have not had time for another post for months! My preaching and my teaching schedule have just made it impossible to post. That being said, my schedule, hopefully, will get even busier. I've applied to do a research PhD at St. John's University. If my abstract is accepted, I'll be doing a research PhD there. Please pray that it is! We are both up way to late. We will be praying! Thanks for the prayer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Stanley...

What is the Abyss? Not an especially theological theme today—although there is plenty to be theological about. Still not quite done with Stricken by God? 8221; Why is it that I keep putting pressure on myself not to make any mistake? I think I know why. My last work experience was a negative one. I dealt with being judged, being denied forgiveness, and being constantly questioned as far as my maturity, dignity, and faith. As a result, I’m constantly waiting for failure and struggling wi...Here’s th...

Approaching the Abyss: Deconstructing an Anti-modern
http://approachingtheabyss.blogspot.com/2008/03/deconstructing-anti-modern.html
What is the Abyss? One of the most important classes I took in my Master's degree dealt with modernity and postmodernity as meta-mindsets. The instructor, my advisor, demonstrated a brilliant understanding of postmodernism's root in modern rationalism. A two-part message on Ravi's podcast, which was actually delivered several years ago, was called Cultural Relativism and the Emasculation of Truth. Scripture, of course, uses the word "knowledge" a lot, even in reference to our knowing God. However, I ...

What is the Abyss? William Hasker, "Persons as Emergent Substances". One of the issues I have been most interested in the past few years has been the theological understanding of anthropology. How does one define a human being scripturally and philosophically? In the Christmas series I preached in December of 2007, I proposed a radically different understanding of the incarnation of Christ based on a completely different anthropological understanding (you can go here. He did a chapter called “Perso...

What is the Abyss? A Moltmannian Agreement to My Last. I wrote my last post on certainty quickly and without a lot of research. Blogging I find to be very much about saying whatever happens to be on my mind. It's not like writing a research paper or anything. That being said, I found a quote in. They did not merely wish to tell of their own new self-understanding in the Easter faith, but in that faith and as a result of it they reported something also about the way of Jesus and about the. What is the Abyss? The Goal of Relative Timelessness: Have My Cake- Eat It Too. Just finished Alan Padgett's chapter in Ganssle's edited work,. Padgett goes on to make a very good argument for the "process" view of time over the stasis view. According to process theories," temporal passage is a real part of the physical universe. While stasis theories " deny the reality of temporal passage. Is there something wrong with God if he doesn't transcend his own nature? Just a short note on Padgett's chapter...
