Two poems about spoons | portmanteau

https://andreaholck.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/two-poems-about-spoons

Two poems about spoons. The spoon knows what the fork does not. A precise instrument, it can measure. To tip the dish to bliss. The spoon knows what the knife does not. Everything will come, little. Divisions are not eternal; everything rejoins in the gut,. No matter how you. The spoon knows; it is gentle. It feeds the frail, the fragile,. The weak, the wobbly,. The shaken and sickly,. The dying, and. It delivers the dollop,. And the root-bear crusts of ice cream floats,. The spoon knows,.

Another lost poem | portmanteau

https://andreaholck.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/another-lost-poem

I found this one in the bottom of a bag I use only in the summer. I remember writing this at a small cafe called Bacchus, in the center of Zagreb. Again, here it is, unedited, put down as is. The sun painted polkadots on my bare arms one rare, cool July noon,. And I grew roots from the tips of my toes late into the day. Beneath a hobbling circus red cement table, gaudy rim, yellow,. The kind they use to zip hotdogs into their pillowy buns. No fruit hung, yet, that day,. All around sat dusty pots,.

A dream deferred | portmanteau

A girl is on her back, feet pointed to the sky; she is laughing out loud. Give me one moment in time, when I’m racing with destiny! Then, in that one moment of time, I will feel…. And the violins are singing and the cymbal is slowly building, the bass drum pounding, building up to Whitney’s signature soaring note) I will feel…. That’s probably fair. I never lost touch with the Gwen in me. And she. Ran in apparel that can only fairly be classified as underpants. Post script: Just for kicks. You are commen...

Winter Blues | Afoot

https://theholcks.wordpress.com/2015/03/16/winter-blues

2015 has has been dishing it out left and right. I just got back from a vicious two mile run. Or, shall I say, slog. Two miles. Slog. What is wrong with this year? Is it just me? Is my apartment killing me or has my internal monologue gone sour? Or have I fashioned myself Job of my running world for some weird psychological reason unknown to my conscious self? What’s going on here…? For almost a full week following. Which brings me to March! It’s been a rocky road, 2015 has. But I’m still on it. The weat...

1 I’m so glad you finally posted, because I love those winter running pictures. It makes me feel nostalgic for Wisconsin and happy I live in a warmer climate all at the same time. 2 I signed up for a half-marathon in Antalya in March, and on on the island of Bozcaada, near Çannakale in May. Might try to throw a couple little guys in. It’s nice to have something to move toward. 4 Running humor below. Too true…it’s very small so click here. To see it full size. My first half marathon! I am home and showered and about to embark on an epic Sunday nap. Today’s run was great! This city. The secrets never end. We started in Yenikapi, one gigantic enthusiastic herd rolling down the highway waving to construction workers hanging out of machinery windows filming us on their cell phones. Very soon, we left the construction behind and to the left, the ancient city walls rose up from overgrown grassy banks, while the Sea of Marmara stretched out on the right. My goal was ...

Beyond the Bridge (VIDEO! One of my October goals was to get back up to running an easy 10K for my weekend long run. Finally, I pushed past my usual 5 mile out-and-back to the bridge to do a full 10 K (and my foot made no protest)! I marked the 3.1 distance at a little museum called Sabanci and set out to find it. And today was so beautiful I just had to take you with me. Sorry about the windy audio! Toward the end, you can see the. October 19, 2014. Can’t wait for our next one together. October 15, 2014.

Running a 10K in ancient Nicaea | Afoot

https://theholcks.wordpress.com/2015/04/21/running-a-10k-in-ancient-nicaea

Running a 10K in ancient Nicaea. This past weekend I finally got out of Istanbul. It’s very hard to believe that I’ve been living in Istanbul now for over 8 months and didn’t leave the city until a few days ago! Minus some trips to the airport of course.). I think I mentioned this before, but Iznik (Nicea) is where the Nicene (Apostle’s Creed) was written back in the day of the Roman Empire. 57 minutes is a very good effort in those conditions. If you’re doing the Istanbul half marath...You are commentin...
