Comfort {Five Minute Friday}. On Friday, May 10th, 2013 by annie. The rain drenches May’s magnolias; the last petals let loose, carpet the soaking earth. Spring has come again, and there’s a kind of comfort in seasons unfolding. One after another, around, around, around. My oldest asks for tea after school, and I see a little bit of my grandmother in her. And there’s a kind of comfort in generations of tea. The more I listen to my own daughters’ stories, the more I remember the gifts of simple trust.

To the Sea and Smallness. Posted in Thoughtful Thursday. On Thursday, June 7th, 2012 by annie. Days ago, I was sinking in all the expected chaos of the week, when we decided on a spontaneous trip to the beach. The occasion was my thirty-first birthday, sandwiched between a wearisome week peppered with poison ivy and a wonderfully exhausting three days of ballet recitals, the arrival of much-loved house guests and a three year old birthday party, directly followed by pink-eye and fevers. Our shadows elong...

On Falling Leaves and Pressing On. Posted in Thoughtful Thursday. On Thursday, October 21st, 2010 by annie. I spent the day off the beaten trail with my little adventurers. It was spontaneous, unplanned, and absolutely what I needed. Seeing fall, experiencing the slow decent, the unabashed beauty that preceeds what will inevitably be cold and harsh and devoid of visible growth, has served as a little whisper in my ear, reminding me to keep putting one foot in front of the other,. To keep hope alive.

Fish & Friends Lunch : Little Ways to Say I Love You. Posted in Mirror Mirror Mondays. On Monday, January 16th, 2012 by annie. In elementary school, I would often discover bananas bearing love notes, inked on peel before I had even crawled out of bed. There were rare nights in sweltering summer, after all the work of putting four girls to bed, that my parents would come in, and tell us to pile in the van: we were going on a pajama run to the ice-cream stand. Last week, we were learning about the letter.

That dusty place with the envelopes that never got stamped. Who is The Epistolarian. Tell me if this sounds familiar…. July 31, 2013. 8220;Lies, lies, lies… Breaking us down with your lies, lies, lies…” -Glen Hansard. Tell me if this sounds familiar. 8221; Ooh, lets not forget, “Luxury is for. 8230; even those with small little dining tables (in fact it’s better that way… could you pass the salt…), so get you some luxury! That dusty place with the envelopes that never got stamped. Who is The Epistolarian. February 21, 2013. I am surrounded by mounds and mounds of “things” and yet the most precious thing in the room to me right now is the way the sun streams in through the bars on our dining room window…. That the world is about to light up with radiance. Photo credit: Martin Gommel. Disciple, Wife, Mom. Lover of books and food. Maker of world-class pizza (well, so say my adoring fans). 6 responses ». Under an Open Sky. How shall we live? Thoughts by Karena Kreger. When You Need to Hide. March 11, 2013. I have been absent from sharing with you. These past 3 months have been marked by great joy and now recently with great sadness and pain. And now I feel sucker punched, empty and trying to find my footing again. And then March 1. Ultrasound. No heartbeat. Take this pill, it’s all over. He calls it hormones. He’s probably right. (Stupid little hormones…). Why am I writing this sitting in Starbucks?

Stubbing my toes on Holy. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A Paraganglioma Named Tomas. In the crucible of life, being made day by day. February 22, 2016. Cut out (tissue or part of an organ). Today is a day to consider that which might need to be cut out of my life. To consider what tissue is participating in bringing life forward, and what tissue might be destroying it. What impedes the flow of blood. What grows and replicates in ways it should not? This is a task of. It doesn’t all ...

Stubbing my toes on Holy. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A Paraganglioma Named Tomas. Newer posts →. May 2, 2015. I need to come back to something. To myself. To my own voice. To steadiness. I feel like I’ve spent the last couple of years thinking that I was finding myself, only to lose myself in something else altogether. Which sounds really over dramatic, but probably just comes down to the fact that I let myself work too much. July 25, 2013. And it’s a thing that I am. I want to t...

Stubbing my toes on Holy. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A Paraganglioma Named Tomas. Monthly Archives: May 2013. May 9, 2013. I wish I’d understood that my mother was dying much sooner than I did. Words like ‘terminal’ are hard to wrap your hands around. I was furious with the word ‘palliative’ that preceded all the treatment options that she had. “Palliative radiation, palliative chemotherapy, palliative pain control.”. I remember when she would brave the topic of her funeral and a...

History of Mother’s Day. As I am wont to do every year at this time, I have been pondering Mother’s Day. Since my Mom died…. almost ten years ago (how is that possible? I’ve come to believe that almost any holiday is a double-edged sword for some people, but Mother’s Day seems to be a day which can cut especially deep. I learned t...

Stubbing my toes on Holy. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A Paraganglioma Named Tomas. Monthly Archives: March 2013. March 29, 2013. I want to live life with my eyes wide open. For too long I have dodged eye contact, hiding in the shadows. The pain loomed, a black hole trying to obliterate me. I felt too much. Thought too much. If I shrank back far enough I didn’t have to feel it all. The too much could not swallow me whole. If I took shallow breaths of the air around me. My words lay...

Stubbing my toes on Holy. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A Paraganglioma Named Tomas. Monthly Archives: July 2015. The Power of Moms. July 31, 2015. Over the last few months I have had occasion more than once to worry about things going on with my kids. My worry radar got so loud a few times that it was deafening and I started casting it out hoping to get any signal back in return. And then they are willing to invite other Moms paddling in the same boat into their own experience.

The whole experience was amazing and inspiring and finally gave me the confidence to do what I have wanted to do for years; make food central to my life by spending time cooking for others and teaching them how to do it for themselves. Down To The River. It’s been quiet around here. Some traveling, some fun work for Be Small Studios. The late summer loss of both sweet grandmothers in two weeks time, and the start of the school year have kept my days more than full. And I’m dancing around this idea of creative absence that I’ll write more about some time soon, but for now, this, from earlier in the summer. The river’s slow, all still on the surface. It mirrors blue skies and arching treetops like glass. 8220;Can I touch it, Mama? I have...

Thursday, May 14, 2015. Tour Farm to table lunch with Chipotle and Lake Meadow Naturals. I shared my fun experience with Chipotle at Reggae on the Block. But a couple days later, I got to attend another fun event. We got to take a tour around Lake Meadow Naturals farm. This meant a lot to me because I've been grocery shopping at this farm store for years but never got to see where the food came from. Farmer Dale took us in the incubation room. We were able to witness eggs hatching. Fio is a pro. Do I rea...
