A Year on the trail: Thoughts on the election: Reid Bellon on the symbolism of Obama
http://ayearonthetrail.blogspot.com/2008/11/thoughts-on-election-reid-bellon-on.html
A Year on the trail. Photos and writings from a year in the American election. Sunday, November 2, 2008. Thoughts on the election: Reid Bellon on the symbolism of Obama. And these groups are far larger in size than we can imagine. Here, in our newest submission, Reid Bellon talks about the moment something about this election clicked with him - when he stumbled upon the sentiments of those typically not mobilized by politics in an atypical election year. Reid is a 27 year old who lives in an area in Geor...

A Year on the trail: Thoughts on the election: The Nashville Minx doesn't buy the hype
http://ayearonthetrail.blogspot.com/2008/10/thoughts-on-election-nashville-minx.html
A Year on the trail. Photos and writings from a year in the American election. Thursday, October 30, 2008. Thoughts on the election: The Nashville Minx doesn't buy the hype. No stranger to the political world, the writer known around these parts as "the Nashville Minx" has been hitting the internet straight from the Volunteer state for several months now. In this piece cross-posted on her own blog, she takes on the rumors of Minnie Mouse at the polls after doing a little bit of early voting. All they do ...

The New Madrid | The New Politics of Culture

Saturday, January 24, 2009. American Revolutionaries in the Age of Obama: Stic.man of Dead Prez. While Barack Obama is surely an admirable person, his task as President is not enviable. Hunkered down in the Oval Office, he is now calculating with advisers as to how big a shovel he has to use to clean up all of the shit left around by his predecessor. And not only that, but how he will pay for the shovel? And, of course, which shit gets shoveled away first? And, after all, will these shovels even work?
The New Madrid: The Ecstasy of James Dickey

Tuesday, November 11, 2008. The Ecstasy of James Dickey. His intimates and apologists liked to talk about the real James Dickey–fortunate son of Buckhead, mollycoddled introvert, intuitive teacher, and sensitive genius. Most people, instead, witnessed the evil doppelganger Jimbo. A creature of carnal appetites disproportionate even to his 6'3" frame, he reveled in shock and scandal, in sauntering over to the dean’s wife and asserting his droit d’ ecrivian. Could put Led Zeppelin to shame.
The New Madrid: Men Will Bleed, Bones Will Be Crushed

Friday, January 16, 2009. Men Will Bleed, Bones Will Be Crushed. Whatever deity is out there in the ether must be smiling down on Pennsylvania this weekend, because only a higher power would bless us with this weekend's AFC game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let me take you on a quick trip through history to emphasize why this match up will unquestionably be a historic one. Game over, man! Of course, it did. The Baltimore Ravens, a team once thought to be as dead as disco when...

Monday, February 2, 2009. By 2006, Americans were suffering from decapitation fatigue. We'd seen enough grainy images of jihadists sawing or threatening to saw the heads off of journalists, aid workers and GI Joe dolls. That people losing their heads had lost a lot of its shock value. Maybe that's why when gunmen burst into a bar in Mexico's Michoacán state that September and dumped a bag of cocos. On the dance floor. And far more brutal. They've responded to Calderón's campaign with a surge in viole...

The New Madrid: The Image of the South
http://thenewmadrid.blogspot.com/2008/11/reviewing-hollywoods-image-of-south.html
Tuesday, November 11, 2008. The Image of the South. Southern film’s primum mobile. Index is Larry Langman and David Ebner’s Hollyood’s Image of the South: A Century of Southern Films. The problems are legion. Anyone old enough to enjoy Patrick Swayze’s matchless time would agree a list of Southern films that excludes Roadhouse. The dramatic touchstone for a huge slice of honky-tonking Southerners, is fundamentally flawed. There’s no (2) Thunder Road. Or A Perfect World. 10) Etc., etc. Langman and Ebner b...

Tuesday, December 30, 2008. The Ballad of Weezy Salah. The perils of the internet do not cease during the Holidays, of course. The ruses just get more focused. According to legend, the e-mail scheme business is a major industry in Lagos, where internet cafes cater to scammers working on prying the cash out from overseas. The ideas of the scams have been numerous, if not silly, at times using false airline tickets, diplomas, and even the forged signature of the Nigerian president. The scam comes in when t...

A Year on the trail
A Year on the trail. Photos and writings from a year in the American election. Monday, November 3, 2008. Thoughts on the Election: Jay Williams on fear. The remarkable dance pundits and politicians have performed around the electric third-rail of American politics has been breathtaking. For the allegedly civil, race and religion are only talked about with at the brush of the hand, under a breath, or at the edge of a whirling skirt of inneundo - never directly, for who could admit such a thing! A Year (Or More) of Shabbats
Friday, January 7, 2011. Shabbat #1 - Just Us. Menu: Filet of Beef with Tomato, Red Onion and Basil Salad, "Mock" Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Toby's Challah (because it "warms the cockles of my Jewish heart" says Steve even though we are trying to cut carbs), Fresh Fruit. In 2006 we toured Israel with the American Jewish Committee. Sitting at a cramped cafeteria table on a kibbutz where the tour had stopped for lunch my law school classmate and fellow traveler told me that she was a convert. I've never been ...
