Car Parking and Road Closures. There are road closures for the Fair and both roads through Bampton - the B3227 (from the junction at Morebath Hill to the junction at West Street) and Brook Street/Briton Street are closed to through traffic on Fair Day from midnight Wednesday until midnight Thursday and diversions will be signposted. Disabled badge holders may prefer to use the Doctors' Surgery car-park in Barnhay - enter Bampton via the South Molton Road and show badge at barrier. See also Fair Map.

A Brief History of the Fair. Bampton Fair takes place on the last Thursday in October. Present Lord of the Manor. Cattle always had a presence at the fair. Houses and shops were boarded up for the day, though not as a fence against the human element. There was one incident involving a cow walking into a tailor’s shop via the plate glass window. It later became an antique shop with a goodly quantity of chinaware(! Inspecting the ponies in the pens before the auction.

Bampton Charter Fair
Local Produce and Crafts. NEXT FAIR: Thursday 25th October 2018. Bampton Fair existed even before King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter in 1258 and it is always held on the last Thursday of October. It is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country. For centuries, the fair mainly sold sheep and cattle and was the largest sheep fair in the South West of England. During the 1880's to the 1980's it evolved to become the famous Bampton Pony Fair trading in Exmoor ponies. We are on Facebook!
