My Red-tailed Hawks and other wildlife observations from around Brooklyn and NYC. Check out City Birder Tours. Tuesday, February 17, 2009. Great Backyard Bird Count. In the past, I've described bird surveys, such as, the annual "Christmas Bird Count". Or the "Spring Birdathon". This is the description of the project from their website:. Only loosel...

Warblers and rumors of warblers: June 2015
http://rumorsofwarblers.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Warblers and rumors of warblers. Monday, June 29, 2015. Prattsville NY, Summer Solstice. On the first weekend of Summer, our friend Gary drove us up to his family's summer house in Prattsville NY, Catskills. It's a lovely place that I've blogged about before. On the way up, we stopped for lunch at the original Bread Alone shop in Boiceville. Ten minutes looking at the scrubby woods at the edge of the parking lot yielded a Vesper Sparrow along with Carolina Wrens, Common Yellowthroats, and Catbirds. Back ...

Blissville: January 2007
http://livinginblissville.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Pictures and musings from a neighborhood in Queens, proving it's not just a state of mind. Tuesday, January 30, 2007. The snow that coated the sidewalks yesterday remains in our backyard. On the sunny side of the street no traces remain, as if it never fell. When I first moved to Blissville, I kept to myself, barely glancing at my neighbors. I knew no one. I thought I was invisible. But I was wrong. They noticed my comings and goings, and knew who I was, too. I just didn't know it. Links to this post.

My adventures in the natural world. Birding Resources–Sample Page. June in the Daks, part 2. Birding the Rio Grande Valley–Finally! The Wonders of Santa Cruz Island. October 8, 2013. But, this one Life Bird seemed small potatoes compared to a pelagic trip, an all-day birding trip at sea, promising oodles of sea birds we would never see on land. Fate being what it is, the pelagic trip out of Santa Barbara was cancelled due to lack of participation (hey, Santa Barbara birders! Impassively watched too, comf...
Warblers and rumors of warblers: August 2015
http://rumorsofwarblers.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Warblers and rumors of warblers. Thursday, August 13, 2015. Hangin' with my peeps. Last weekend, the shorebirds finally showed up at Inwood Hill Park. Following a report by Nathan O'Reilly on Saturday, I went up on Sunday and saw my first peeps of the season. Peeps- tiny sandpipers about the size of sparrows- are fun to watch skitter along the mudflats or beaches. Sunday I mustly saw Least Sandpipers, like these:. The Least of sandpipers. I often wonder if they remember their close encounters with people.

I think it's AWESOME! Monday, March 1, 2010. Yikes, I'm a chaser! Now how did this happen? Am I on my way to becoming a "Twitcher"? What's a chaser you ask? Well the answer to that is in an older post entitled "What Kind of Birder are You? So I wasn't really chasing was I? This was in January. 2 more lifers added. So what happened, when did I turn into a chaser? Can Twitching be far behind? This week I am not going anywhere.I am not going to chase after any birds. This weekend I will rest, take my...I jus...

http://birdsandwords-larryz.blogspot.com/2015/05/great-bay-blvd-wma-55-gull-billed-tern.html
And any happy combinations that may result, plus various maunderings that occasionally pop to mind. Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Great Bay Blvd WMA 5/5- Gull-billed Tern, Seaside Sparrow. I'd had enough of woodland trails which seemed to be all that I had walked the last week, so after the Blue Grosbeak excitement, I drove down to Great Bay Blvd to scout out the what was in and on the marshes. And most were, but standing on a point were two Gull-billed Terns. My explorations yield 5 more county birds. My on...

The City Birder
My Red-tailed Hawks and other wildlife observations from around Brooklyn and NYC. Check out City Birder Tours. And Birding Basics Class. Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Green-Wood Cemetery pre-Spring Walk. This past Sunday I lead an enthusiastic group of birders in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. We normally see a few of these robust, rusty-colored sparrows scattered within mixed flocks during the winter, not in homogeneous flocks. I told the group to keep their ears peeled for its rich, sweet, slurred so...

Sunday, 12 March 2017. Greenleighton Moor and Fontburn. Three Buzzard and one Raven flew over calling strongly. As I approached a feeder stream another pair of Buzzard flew overhead. As soon as I reached the stream I caught sight of a Dipper. Then I realised there was another close by. One of them adopted a pose of pointing its bill vertically skyward whenever the other approached. Don't know what that was all about. Perhaps a mating routine. They stayed close together for the time I watched. This mornin...
