Down On The (Howard Family) Farm

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm. Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Once upon a time, farm-wife Katie said "We can have cattle, but I NEVER want us to have a bull. Ever.". Famous last words, right? Kevin and I purchased three Belted Galloway heifers about a month ago that were to be bred when we picked them up. However, about a week before we got them their owner very apologetically had to tell us his bull had become impotent. Therefore, we purchased open (unbred) heifers. About a week ago I saw a posting for a Be...

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm: Lessons Learned

http://www.downonthehowardfamilyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/04/lessons-learned.html

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm. Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Earlier this week I introduced you to our first five cows. This post is to share with you some of the best moments we shared with them. As you recall, I said that we started with six cows. Ernie, Piggy, Dean, Molly, Curly, and Shorty. Well, Ernie went down the road rather quickly last summer because, as you can see, he has horns. Having. Horns isn't a problem. Using. Horns is. And he knew how to use them! Cows are like fly magnets in the midst o...

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm: What's in a Name?

http://www.downonthehowardfamilyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/04/whats-in-name.html

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm. Monday, April 1, 2013. What's in a Name? Chosen carefully before the arrival of a baby, name books being pored over,. Trying the "ring" of different ones. Even naming a pet can be a difficult process. I helped a friend look over dog names not long ago when she and her husband purchased a puppy. Livestock naming. well, there are a few schools of thought on it. Here are a few:. 1 They shouldn't be named. Period. Don't name your food. So I name our animals. I knew from befo...

http://www.downonthehowardfamilyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/03/its-been-long-time.html

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm. Thursday, March 14, 2013. It's Been A Long Time. Well yes, I'm apparently having a rocky start to my blogging! It's been roughly 6 months since my last (and first) post! A lot has happened since then, so I'm going to do my best to write a brief recap and tell you what's coming up, Lord willing! All five are now in people's freezers and we get compliments on the quality, flavor, and leanness of our meat on a regular basis. This year we're hoping to grow slightly and t...

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm: New Faces on the Farm!

http://www.downonthehowardfamilyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/03/new-faces-on-farm.html

Down On The (Howard Family) Farm. Tuesday, March 19, 2013. New Faces on the Farm! We have new faces on our farm as of Saturday! They're very furry and look like Oreos. Whatever name you prefer. Friday evening we left right as Kevin got home and trucked across the state of PA to spend the night in Mechanicsburg. Then it was up at 5:30 Saturday morning to hit the road for our cows! We were finally going to purchase the first of our chosen breed! Lesson learned. so we left one behind. The only problem is th...

Country Lane Crafts and Antiques: February 2014

http://countrylanecrafts.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 28, 2014. I was cleaning my artist brushes late last night at the kitchen sink when one of my favorite ones slipped out of my hand and into the drain. Slick as a whistle. This morning, as George was preparing to tear the drain apart, I decided to try my luck first with a pair of barber scissors. It worked! It took a few trys, but the blades were long enough and skinny enough to reach down and gingerly grab the brush. But the story doesn't end there. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. What's y...

Country Lane Crafts and Antiques: Country Life = Squirrel Encounters

http://countrylanecrafts.blogspot.com/2015/06/country-life-squirrel-encounters.html

Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Country Life = Squirrel Encounters. Yesterday afternoon, I went out in our yard,. And discovered this little guy had beat me to it. We have an abundance of maple tree seed helicopters this year. Apparently, they make for some good eatin'! He knew I was there, he would stop every so often and watch me. I would freeze, and he would soon go back to his meal. I have no idea how long he had been there before I saw him,. But I watched him for at least 15 minutes. We are located at:.

Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Country Life = Spring Babies on the Farm. Say hello to our newest addition - Striker! This was taken just a few hours after he was born, isn't he a cutie? As is usually the case, by the time we found the new baby,. Mama already had everything under control. Willow may be a first time mother, but she knows exactly what to do,. And so does Striker. Their God-given instincts take over. Why the name Striker? We just kept saying how striking he looks with that dark black hair. After t...

Country Lane Crafts and Antiques: Once a Drawer, Now a Shadowbox

http://countrylanecrafts.blogspot.com/2015/06/once-drawer-now-shadowbox.html

Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Once a Drawer, Now a Shadowbox. Not all furniture can be saved. Sometimes "trash to treasure" is simply not an option. But even if the furniture piece as a whole can not be saved,. Parts of it can be. Oftentimes, the drawers are still decent. And they make great shadowboxes! I paired these ones with dolls and turned them into. All it takes is a little imagination. And a hot glue gun. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We are located at:. Promote Your Page Too.

Tuesday, February 24, 2015. What do you do with an old nail keg that falls apart? Paint on the individual slats. Sometimes it seems like we run across more barrels and kegs. That are falling apart, than we do in ones that are intact. The slats (or staves) make a fun thing for me to paint on. We have some good news (we hope! Fingers crossed that they will indeed be fixed! Country Lane Crafts and Antiques: September 2014

http://countrylanecrafts.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 25, 2014. History and a Fall Festival. My shop is on Jefferson Avenue (in Moundsville, WV). Jefferson is the main business district in our small town of around 10,000 people. It's also a street full of history, starting in 250 BC. Give or take a year. What is this, you ask? In a bit more recent time, still on Jefferson Avenue, the West Virginia Penitentiary was built. in 1866. Besides filling the booths, we also had a display on the sidewalk, making it quite full in front of our shop.

It may be too early yet for real flowers, but we can beckon the season with some made from fabric! These were made by a friend, she made them from an old quilt. These were made from the same quilt. Such fun spring decor! I made these ones, the ones on the left and right were made in the same style. Thursday, March 12, 2015.

Adventures in the Dirt. Key to Food Terms. Posted by downonthegarm in Food. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having a full pantry – especially when you’ve worked hard to fill it up. I especially look forward to harvesting the squash each year and laying it out in the pantry to finish curing. Today, I brought in 120 lb of sweet meats, 25 lb of delicatas, and a few butternuts:. Quinoa, dry beans, and more squash are still to be added to the pantry this season – but where will they fit? For dessert...
