Tout Va Bien au Bénin: August 2010

http://laureninbenin.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Tout Va Bien au Bénin. One person can make a difference and everyone should try. Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Needless to say, I may be coming back with really short hair…that’s only if my host Mama allows me to cut it which she has yet to do. Guess I’ll continue the braid and headband look for the next two years. Don’t worry Erin, I won’t be coming back with dreadlocks for your wedding ☺. Other than that, everything has been going pretty "normal." Au revoir! Tuesday, August 10, 2010. PREKETE here I come.

http://laureninbenin.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Tout Va Bien au Bénin. One person can make a difference and everyone should try. Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Je m’appelle Fatimatou. OKAY, I was given this Muslim name this past week when I visited my petite village, Pr èkètè. I am the FIRST Peace Corps volunteer they have ever had, therefore I am Fatimatou, which means “first daughter.”. I also received a name in Lokpa, the local language, “Gnon” (pronounced yohn), which also means “premiere fille.”. Well, I have the nicest man for my homologue. All the...

Tout Va Bien au Bénin. One person can make a difference and everyone should try. Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Culture Stun.a lesser degree of "shock". Monday, July 18, on…]. First of all, this whole week of initial training has been ridiculously organized and beneficial. We have been given a breakdown on each process that we go through in order to become official volunteers (I’m technically a trainee right now until I get sworn-in at the end of 9 week training). Little do they know, I’m a volunteer J. During ...

Tout Va Bien au Bénin. One person can make a difference and everyone should try. Sunday, February 5, 2012. The HEAT is On. Yes, the hot season has arrived. Bye bye cool nights of sleeping in my bed with a sheet and hello to nights of sleeping on my cement floor next to my screen door. The truth is I’ve got words coming out of my ears! December and January I used 2 sheets at night and wore a sweater in the mornings. A sort of African winter. Not much else to say but the heat is here. L. I’ve been re...

Tout Va Bien au Bénin. One person can make a difference and everyone should try. Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Summer Camp.Beninese Style. For the last 2 weeks I have workin’ to get kids to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX! So where was I? Science, Art, and Engineering CAMP! Myself along with 2 other PC volunteers chose to help out and we were the “animators”/teachers for the classes. Elaina chose science, Bailey taught Engineering, and I taught ART! Here is a little information about the projects we did in each class:...

Bisous du Benin!: November 2010

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

My adventures in african livin'. Thursday, November 25, 2010. Posted by shell dawg. So my homolouge Reine is a month pregnant? She's had “malaria” on and off for like a month and a half. And a couple days ago when I was asking about her health, she started laughing and said it's not malaria, that she's pregnant. But she was laughing hysterically when she said it, so is she joking? She has a fiancee that lives in Cotonou, and I haven't seen him in months, so who's this baby daddy? Posted by shell dawg.

Bisous du Benin!: July 2011

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

My adventures in african livin'. Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Posted by shell dawg. It has been an egregious amount of time since my last blog post. For that, I apologize! I don't really remember what the last thing I told ya'll about was- but I've pretty much been on the road since the end of April doing In-Services for Peace Corps. Which generally means spending a lot of time in the south, and saving up my money so I can afford to go to the one Indian restaurant in the country. I love you both so much!

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

My adventures in african livin'. Amour and vie lancement! Thursday, November 17, 2011. Posted by shell dawg. And Hugues, who is the Beninese guy in charge of Amour and Vie Cotonou. It was really great that they came out and supported us, and it's always really helpful to get somebody else to talk to your team in French, and cover anything that you (I) said, which your team (my team) totally ignored. We had yam pilee (mashed yams) and chicken. It was actually really good. Aledjo trip and mountain hike.

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2011/11/malaria-and-food-poisoning.html

My adventures in african livin'. Malaria and food poisoning! Thursday, November 17, 2011. Posted by shell dawg. A word about my health! Pretty much right after posting that last blog post about having malaria, I got back to Penelan and got malaria AGAIN. I don't think it was as bad as the last time, and I took the medicine pretty quickly and kept it in check. My mom is convinced that I was running myself a little ragged in between bouts and the first case of malaria never really left my body. Aledjo trip...

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2011/11/aledjo-trip-and-mountain-hike.html

My adventures in african livin'. Aledjo trip and mountain hike. Thursday, November 17, 2011. Posted by shell dawg. A couple weeks ago (.maybe a month? It was whenever kadafi died) my close mates Jared and Heather and I had a nice little pow-wow in Jared's town of Aledjo. They each live like only 10k away from me, but they are both teachers, and somehow our schedules never really line up, so it's very rarely that we're all together! In the morning we went and hiked the mountain, which was steep! Other Fun...

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2011/07/extra-extra-penelan-news.html

My adventures in african livin'. Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Posted by shell dawg. So there have been a LOT of changes in Penelan! My homologue, Reine, DID have the mysterious baby! It was born the day after I left for America. Her name is Gracia (or Grace). She's adorable. Reine has like this swanky legit crib that she got in Cotonou for the baby. I don't know how she brought it up to village. so many things I'll never get. Now it's like a football field! I give it five more years. I can play my ukulele a...

http://smussett.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

My adventures in african livin'. Sunday, September 5, 2010. Posted by shell dawg. So I'm just finishing up my post visit to Penelan! I'm at the Natitangou workstation right now, spending the night, and then I'm gonna head back down to Porto-Novo tomorrow with a group of other stagiers! Booo, I don't want to go back to host-family! It was fun to plan all the stuff I'm going to buy- but it made me a little restless to begin shopping. My house is two smallish rooms, and then I have a small little cement...

Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Wow What a ride. Nowhere's a list of all of the wonderful things that have happened to me in the past 2 months:. Later that week, on April 9th, I got a FANTASTIC visitor by the name of Gaurav Gharti-Chhetri. After weeks of prep and planning and freaking out, I finally arrived home from class one morning to find a gaurav asleep in my bed and a kleiman asleep on my floor. What lovely situation! We're 5 years old. After a serious scrub and a nap, we hung out around the hostel/farm all...

Lauren in a tea cup.

Lauren in a tea cup. A collective rambling of thoughts on food and attempts at yummy things. Friday, 1 March 2013. Those that know me, and those that read my blog, are by now, probably aware that I'm a rather huge fan of the humble egg. Well, I am. I post about eggs a lot, and post a lot of egg recipes. You make think, 'Hmm. too simple'. But, sometimes simple, is splendid. Seriously! Southern Influence: Fried Prawns. Guess where this incredible adventure will take me? The great and mighty! Sunday, June 24, 2007. The face of love. That first year teaching there were so many times when I felt like I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. I carried with me the years of teacher training I had in university and a strong passion for sharing an enthusiasm for learning with children, all children. Protect those I love. Heal our grief at loss. Connect our hearts and souls. Focus me on your task. And help me to lay it all aside. But God’s way of thinking and acting is so much more masterfully or...

Lauren in Cape Coast, Ghana. This is just a blog about all of my adventures as an intern in Cape Coast, Ghana. Thanks for tuning in! Monday, October 4, 2010. Written on the plane Friday night]. I never thought I would have to say that. October first felt so far away but here it is and here I am- sitting on a plane, hurling like a speeding bullet back to America. Back to home, family, and friends. It feels unreal. Was I unhappy here? I swear I loved Ghana…. This Ghana place has. And listen to the rhythm o...
