Almost Birding

A naturalist struggling to survive in birdless Surrey. Published stuff and reviews. Smartphone wildlife macro photography. Back in May I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone and discovered that the camera is excellent for macro photography. While not quite the same quality of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, the Note 4's 16 MP front camera doesn't do a bad job and is great for those impromptu photographic opportunities. Common Carder Bee Bombus pascuorum. Worcester Park, Surrey, 28 July 2015.

Almost Birding: Western Bee-fly: 10 July

http://www.leedingain.com/2015/07/western-bee-fly-10-july.html

A naturalist struggling to survive in birdless Surrey. Published stuff and reviews. Western Bee-fly: 10 July. Spent some time watching Western Bee-flies Bombylius canescens. At Chudleigh Knighton Heath Devon Wildlife Trust reserve today. Found a colony of around five or six that were firing eggs into the nest burrows of their host mining bee species. Not still for a second, these are darn tricky to photograph! All were females as far as I could see (eyes do not meet at the top). Posted by Lee Dingain.

Almost Birding: High Brown Fritillaries at Aish Tor: 7, 8 and 9 July

http://www.leedingain.com/2015/07/high-brown-fritillaries-at-aish-tor-7-8.html

A naturalist struggling to survive in birdless Surrey. Published stuff and reviews. High Brown Fritillaries at Aish Tor: 7, 8 and 9 July. South-west England is now the species stronghold. There is some good news though - last year their numbers increased. By more than 180% compared to 2013 - a ten year high. Still in flower beneath the Bracken at Aish Tor was a nice surprise, and 1 Grey Wagtail on the River Dart and a Yellowhammer were the best birds noted. A quick visit late afternoon on the 8th found j...

Almost Birding: March 2015

http://www.leedingain.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

A naturalist struggling to survive in birdless Surrey. Published stuff and reviews. Solar eclipse birding: 20 March. Frustratingly, thick cloud this morning completely obscured the 85% solar eclipse, with a small drop in light and a much more noticeable drop in temperature being the only clues to the spectacle unfolding above. Of course, in the early afternoon the cloud cleared for a beautiful early spring day. Spring passage has begun in style at the patch with a fantastic summer plumage littoralis.

A naturalist struggling to survive in birdless Surrey. Published stuff and reviews. Staines and Stanwell Moors. Staines Moor and Stanwell Moor have been my local patch since 2003, although I visited on and off long before then. This page describes Staines Moor and the wildlife to be found there (this page is far from finished so please bear with me). Page contents (click on link to jump to section):. Staines Moor, looking east, with King George VI and Staines Reservoirs in the background (WikiPedia).

Bangkok City Birding: May 2015

http://bangkokcitybirding.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 10, 2015. Five broadbills in five hours. I spent this morning birding at Kaeng Krachan National Park, focusing on the "three streams" area beyond Bang Krang camp. Being a weekend in the middle of nesting season this area was very very popular with bird phtographers, but I still managed to get away from the crowds to find my own birds. As I dove through the National Park soon after first light I picked up three Blue-winged Pittas. Associating with a male Orange-breasted Trogon. Today really wa...

Bangkok City Birding: November 2014

http://bangkokcitybirding.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2014. A walk around Suan Rot Fai this morning produced a few notable birds including a Peregrine. Three Pale-legged/Sakhalin Leaf Warblers. Two Grey-headed Canary Flycatchers. And two species of Bittern. On the same pool - a juv Cinnamon. And two adult male Yellows. Most bizarre to see was a Chinese Pond Heron in full breeding plumage - presumably the same bird that I saw in late October, featured on Birding Frontiers. Monday, November 24, 2014. 22nd and 23rd Nov 2014. This mornin...

Wednesday, 19 March 2014. Lots and lots to be getting on with so just a quick catch up on what I've been up to this month. A trip to Scotland on 10th and 11th didn't go as well as planned, with a speeding ticket and no American Herring Gull in the Campbeltown area, although we did find the drake BLACK DUCK. At Strontian.Other highlights from the trip included two Snow Geese. And good numbers of Greenland White-fronted Geese. Drake Black Duck at Strontian with female Mallard.
