One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Monday, November 27, 2006. This one's for my lovely Auntie Linda who was disappointed to see a lack of spider pictures on the blog. Sorry Linda but I'll keep an eye out for some particularly nasty examples of our eight-legged friends and include them soon. Meanwhile, here's a couple of pythons that we stumbled across up in Queensland. They're harmless. At least I think they are! We spent most of our tim...

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Friday, February 17, 2006. Winmalee, Blue Mountains NP (12th February '06). This place is absolutely packed with birds especially down next to the creek! Looking down into the Blue Gum Swamp Creek gully. I reckon just over a metre long, and if I had stood on him, very fatal! A lovely walk though and when I'm over the emotional trauma, I'll be back. Target bird: Pilotbird (negative). Scotland 20 France 16.

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Friday, June 30, 2006. Hebridean Flora and Fauna. The flora and fauna on the recent trip to the Uists was simply spectacular. I'm not denying that a bit of luck was involved in turning up 64 bird species. In the 5 days, harbour porpoises. In Loch Maddy, an otter. On the Lochportain road, and prolonged views of a school of minke whales. Off Aird an Runair and a whopping basking shark. In Uig bay on Skye.

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Well, isn't it always the way. When you're not actually looking for something you end up finding it. And so it was on Good Friday, driving back from Mal's mother's place in Springwood, when I scored a new bird on the power lines beside the road descending from the mountains. And not only was it a new bird, it was a new pigeon! The White-headed Pigeon # 242. Monday, April 03, 2006.

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Wednesday, August 23, 2006. Central Coast (20th August '06). Another glorious weekend and another jaunt up to the central coast with Jarrod. This time to the South Wyong sewage treatment plant, the inland side of Tuggerah Lake and a quick stop at Strickland State Forest on the edge of Gosford. Sewage plant ponds - quite nice actually. N (White's; Ground) Thrush #249. A super little thing which was remar...

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Thursday, March 09, 2006. Penrith Lakes (18th February '06). Much of the area has been developed for rowing. Just to prove I was there! A darter shares the water with some dodgy rowing types. Target bird: Great-crested grebe (negative). Catch the pigeon: Crested. Roadkill strike assessment: Minimal (Lycra-clad rowing types). Posted by Iain @ 3/09/2006. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Wednesday, September 06, 2006. The Great Platypus Hunt (3rd September '06). Treemonkey and the Wingecarribee river at Berrima. Eastern rosella (top) and Crimson rosella. We enthusiastically headed off down the river though and were fooled by several floating sticks and the odd fish before, right there in front of us, a platypus came swimming past on the surface. Result! Posted by Iain @ 9/06/2006.

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Monday, January 30, 2006. Myall Lakes NP (28th-29th January '06). Ah, the doubters! They said it could never happen but the Bush Mobile made it the 240 km north up the coast from Sydney to Myall Lakes NP, and back again! And here she is at last in her natural environment. The bush mobile back in the bush. Bulahdelah Motor Lodge motel. The dunes abruptly meet the heath and woodland. Not many raptors - Wh...

One in the Bush. My attempts to track down the Wompoo Fruit-Dove and other ridiculously named pigeons. Monday, May 29, 2006. Nurragingy Reserve (21st May '06). Picnic areas and Eastern Creek - mmm lovely. Slammed into the flock and killed one of them! A pair of chestnut teal and a beautiful pair of eastern rosellas on the way back to the car rounded things off. Next time I'll start with this corner of the park. They were locking the gate in front of me when I got to the exit but luckily they saw ...Simon...
