Doubts on progress and technology. Laquo; The Revenge of the Circulating Fan. Radiant and Conductive Heating Systems ». Restoring the Old Way of Warming: Heating People, not Places. These days, we provide thermal comfort in winter by heating the entire volume of air in a room or building. In earlier times, our forebear's concept of heating was more localized: heating people, not places. Illustration: People gathering around a tile stove. Die Bauern und die Zeitung. How Sustainable is Stored Sunlight? - LOW-TECH MAGAZINE

http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2015/05/sustainability-off-grid-solar-power.html

Doubts on progress and technology. Laquo; How Sustainable is PV solar power? Why We Need a Speed Limit for the Internet ». How Sustainable is Stored Sunlight? One of the constraints of solar power is that it is not always available: it is dependent on daylight hours and clear skies. In order to fill these gaps, a storage solution or a backup infrastructure of fossil fuel power plants is required - a factor that is often ignored when scientists investigate the sustainability of PV systems. Likewise, most ...

Doubts on progress and technology. Laquo; The right to 35 mobiles. Reinventing the wheel ». Download, print, fold, paste. Downloading cars, houses and aeroplanes is no science fiction. In the future, a desktop fabricator. May be as common as a desktop computer today, 3D-printers. Might complement inkjet printers. Downloading, sharing and printing of appliances might become as ordinary (and controversial) as it is today with music, movies and texts. Cut-outs have a long history. 1 Historical paper models.

Bike powered electricity generators are not sustainable - LOW-TECH MAGAZINE

http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2011/05/bike-powered-electricity-generators.html

Doubts on progress and technology. Laquo; The short history of early pedal powered machines. Pedal powered farms and factories: the forgotten future of the stationary bicycle ». Bike powered electricity generators are not sustainable. Pedalling a modern stationary bicycle to produce electricity might be a great work-out, but in many cases, it is not sustainable. The trouble is that the present approach to pedal power results in highly inefficient machines. With one exception (the ' Fender Blender. A peda...

Doubts on progress and technology. Laquo; Electric Velomobiles: as Fast and Comfortable as Automobiles, but 80 times more Efficient. How to Make Everything Ourselves: Open Modular Hardware ». Electric Velomobiles: as Fast and Comfortable as Automobiles, but 80 times more Efficient. Abandoned Flour Mill in Spain

http://www.lowtechmagazines.com/2013/01/abandoned-flour-mill-in-spain.html

Abandoned Flour Mill in Spain. January 17, 2013. Is a fascinating blog documenting abandoned buildings in Spain. There are quite some photo reportages about factories, and this one in particular is noteworthy: a forgotten flour mill. With part of the machinery still in excellent condition. The author does not reveal any location for any of the buildings on the blog. Comments on this entry are closed. Next post: “Gravity Powered” Lights (and How to Make Them More Powerful). The Air Medal is awarded for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. The short story is that his F-18 was hit by lightening and he received an electric shock that scrambled his neurological network. In spite of this, he managed to get his plane back safely. The story in the local paper is here. Home on the Range.

http://peripateticengineer.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Notes From Around The World by an Oilfield Troubleshooter. Friday, February 20, 2015. We survived another Mardi Gras. It's been a slow week at the office. Most schools have the week off and families take advantage of it to either go skiing or to visit Orlando. If you want to go to Orlando, don't schedule it for Mardi Gras week as the place will be full of New Orleans escapees. Of $145 million to the city. Not to bad for the Greatest Free Show on earth. A Mattress that Lasts a Lifetime. March 16, 2013. 8220;Our mattress is worn out. We need a new one, but I’ve been dreading. Buying a new one. I don’t like the waste of it all: The ignoble dragging. Wednesday, February 5, 2014. I noticed it's been almost a year since I last posted. My house project took over most of my spare time, and any wrench time has mostly gone toward maintenance of my 2 trucks. I have finished the second rear wheel, and am deciding whether to start on the front wheels or start working on the transmission. I have found a few parts for the future, and need to sell off some of the parts I will not be using. I also found a set of "hubcaps" that were in pretty good shape. What a sw...
