Ruffled Feathers: April 2015

https://midwalesringers.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Some of the results, achievements and highlights of the Mid-Wales Ringing Group. Wednesday, 29 April 2015. Secondly, the Dipper monitoring we undertake for our RAS scheme is going really well. To date we have monitored at least 170 nesting attempts, confirmed 95 full clutch sizes, identified 126 colour-ringed adults and ringed 324 chicks from 79 broods and we are only just over half-way through the season! A dipper nest at a rare natural nest site in a bit of overhanging turf. The same site in close-up!

Ruffled Feathers: That ain't no Nightjar!!

https://midwalesringers.blogspot.com/2015/07/that-aint-no-nightjar.html

Some of the results, achievements and highlights of the Mid-Wales Ringing Group. Friday, 17 July 2015. That ain't no Nightjar! An iPhone record shot just before it ripped a great big gash in my thumb! Ravens are well known for being able to tear flesh off carcasses and it appears you don't have to be dead for them to try! 17 July 2015 at 20:04. Like the chick that puked dead rat puree into your mouth. Keep up the fantastic work. Baz. 20 July 2015 at 15:34. 18 July 2015 at 16:25. 20 July 2015 at 15:36.

Ruffled Feathers: July 2015

https://midwalesringers.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Some of the results, achievements and highlights of the Mid-Wales Ringing Group. Sunday, 26 July 2015. Geolocation, geolocation, geolocation. Female Nightjar on nest. Photo © Jacques Turner-Moss. One of this year's nests in South Wales was very close to a major track upgrade and, whilst I was sure the passing lorries etc wouldn't disturb the birds during the day as long as a suitable buffer zone was instigated, the earthmovers did need to get quite close! As the map above shows the bird in question didn'...

Ruffled Feathers: January 2015

https://midwalesringers.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Some of the results, achievements and highlights of the Mid-Wales Ringing Group. Thursday, 29 January 2015. 2014 - The best year yet - by far! All of these totals exceed the annual ringing totals for the entire British scheme for the respective species in some years showing just how great our input is to research on these target species. A few notable milestones were reached during the year including the 8,000th Swallow, 3,000th Chough, 2,500th Woodcock and Dunlin, 2,000th Willow Warbler, 1,000th Meadow ...

Ruffled Feathers: The wonder of Whimbrels in common have we

https://midwalesringers.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-wonder-of-whimbrels-in-common-have.html

Some of the results, achievements and highlights of the Mid-Wales Ringing Group. Monday, 11 May 2015. The wonder of Whimbrels in common have we. Over the past week or two Mid Wales Ringers and the Pembrokeshire Ringing Group have once again been targeting some of the many Whimbrel that pass through West Wales at this time every year on spring migration. From their wintering areas in West Africa. To more northerly breeding grounds. It is a bit disappointing that we have not had any sightings on the breedi...

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study: Another sighting of Med Gull 3KNT

http://bhgullsni.blogspot.com/2015/07/another-sighting-of-med-gull-3knt.html

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study. Gallery - First-winter BHG. Wednesday, 15 July 2015. Another sighting of Med Gull 3KNT. Neal Warnock got in touch last night to report a colour-ringed Med Gull at Larne, Co Antrim. This same bird was photographed by Ronald Surgenor at Portrush last September, after being ringed in the Netherlands last June (see link below). Http:/ bhgullsni.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/mediterranean-gull-white-3knt.html. Nice to know it's still hanging around our shores. The main objec...

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study: April 2015

http://bhgullsni.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study. Gallery - First-winter BHG. Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Just as this time last year, the blog has taken a backseat recently to fieldwork for much bigger, darker birds than Black-headed Gulls! Brood of four large Raven chicks in Co. Down. We have more than doubled the number of Raven nests we're monitoring for the NI Raptor Study Group since 2014 and this has taken up much of our time of the past few weeks. Friday, 17 April 2015. Latvian re-sightings are like buses.

Ros Green - Gingernut Birder: Queensland, Australia

http://rgreengingernutbirder.blogspot.com/2015/02/queensland-australia.html

Ros Green - Gingernut Birder. My adventures into the ornithological / zoological world and more. Wednesday, 4 February 2015. The last month in Australia has been phenomenal! The ecology, flora and fauna are all entirely new to me, and I'm endlessly learning new things on my travels. Since then I've been to Fraser Island, Kingaroy and the Bunya mountains with Mum and Wayne (her friend). The Bunya's were my first taste of a rainforest and quite incredible. Since then I've been working my way north, travell...

Graham's Bird Ringing Blog: September 2012

http://grahamuneybirdringing.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Bird ringing from Mid Wales and beyond. Sunday, 23 September 2012. Sorry for the lack of new posts here lately. The news is, we're leaving Canna in mid October. Very frustrated with the management of the island, and upset to be leaving behind such a wonderful place, and some truly lovely people. Not suited to island life? Not at all. We're off to Shetland! No jobs to go to as of yet, but we'll find something soon, and in the meantime we're looking into various small business ideas. All for now,.

Ros Green - Gingernut Birder. My adventures into the ornithological / zoological world and more. Sunday, 7 December 2014. 3 month round up and future plans. I can't really believe it's been over 3 months since I last updated my blog. This hasn't been through a lack of interesting things to post, but more through a lack of time to post about the interesting things I've been doing. I've only spent a handful of days at home since leaving Skomer. Swallow roost - juvenile. Juvenile Female Wheatear at CES -.

Graham's Bird Ringing Blog: Now in Wales

http://grahamuneybirdringing.blogspot.com/2013/11/now-in-wales.html

Bird ringing from Mid Wales and beyond. Thursday, 28 November 2013. Well, our little sojourn in Shetland is over and we've arrived back in the woodlands and mountains of the south. We're now living in the wilds of Powys, in the old county of Montgomeryshire with amazing views from our front windows across the Banwy valley to the Dyfnant Forest and the mountains the Berwyn, Hirnant and Aran ranges beyond. The Aran range in cloud. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Graham's Bird Ringing Blog: A Blustery Canna

http://grahamuneybirdringing.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-blustery-canna.html

Bird ringing from Mid Wales and beyond. Monday, 13 August 2012. Just back on Canna after a week away. Had a quick walk around Sanday just now. The skies are very grey out there, rain is threatening, and the wind's blowing hard from the south-east. There's a good sized mixed flock of finches coming and going in our garden. About 60 birds in total, with Linnet, Twite, Greenfinch, and Siskin making up the bulk of the birds, plus a few Meadow Pipit and Pied Wagtail joining in the fun. View my complete profile.

Graham's Bird Ringing Blog: Back to the tits

http://grahamuneybirdringing.blogspot.com/2013/11/back-to-tits.html

Bird ringing from Mid Wales and beyond. Thursday, 28 November 2013. Back to the tits. I know this probably sounds strange, but having lived on remote Scottish islands for the last two years, there are a lot of common garden birds that I haven't seen, let along ringed, in all that time. So, today I opened a net in my garden in Wales for the first time since we got here a month ago. Nice to remind myself how much Blue Tits nip, and to get down to some simple ageing and sexing of common birds.
