We saw these people, all young adults with different background and personalities, different families and friends. Just knowing that these people are not just being painted, but they are real people in the world. This brought a connection between the people in the paintings and myself. Obviously the appropriation of a pre-existing photograph is contrary to modernist notions of originality, and he takes that ever further by reproducing the image again and again - which ends up working almost as a commentary on the depersonalization of celebrity culture.
