Travels With Birds: April 2015
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, 30 April 2015. Red Morph Eastern Screech Owl (Petit-duc maculé). Some of you may recall that I located an Eastern Screech Owl Megascops asio. Last year on a trail quite close to my house. I last saw the bird sometime in the fall and was never able to relocate it during the winter. Even though the pictures are not fantastic the bird can be seen very clearly and we absolutely do not wish to approach it any closer for fear of interfering with any breeding attempt which may be taking place. This in...

Travels With Birds: A Requiem for a Wetland
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-requiem-for-wetland.html
Friday, 10 July 2015. A Requiem for a Wetland. Many regular readers of my blog will have seen the numerous posts I have made about the wonderful little wetland at Creekside Church. Here are a few idyllic scenes from that wetland. Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Eastern Kingbird. Barn Swallow, Red-winged Blackbird. Furthermore the whole operation smacks of deceit. The pond was drained on a weekend when minimal public scrutiny is likely. The leaders of the church turned on the tap and walked away, with...And w...

Travels With Birds: March 2015
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 31 March 2015. Peregrine Falcon (Faucon pèlerin) in Kitchener, ON. Last year a pair of Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus. Bred successfully on the Sun Life Financial tower in downtown Waterloo. This year due to maintenance on their roof, the company requested that the nest box be removed, and they were unwilling to have it reinstalled. It was getting late in the breeding season for the falcons and we knew that pair bonds had been formed. We had our fingers crossed that we would not be too l...

Travels With Birds: July 2014
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Monday, 28 July 2014. Hoopoe in the Hole. Eurasian Hoopoe (Huppe fasciée) Upupa epops. Near St. Marcet, France. Thanks to advance knowledge by good friends in the area, we were able to view for as long as we wished, this young Eurasian Hoopoe peering out from its nest cavity in the wall of an old farm building. Even though the young bird has advanced well into adult type plumage its gape is clearly apparent in all the pictures. Sunday, 6 July 2014. As children, Miriam and her sister Karen, looked forward...

Travels With Birds: January 2015
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 29 January 2015. Carolina Wren (Troglodyte de Caroline) and Snowy Owl (Harfang des neiges). Halton County, ON. My daughter, Caroline, was visiting us from Ottawa, so we took her down to LaSalle Park to see the Trumpeter Swans Cygnus buccinator. And any other gems we could find. Here she is with the swans forming a backdrop on the ice of the bay, now completely frozen over. While checking out a small posse of Dark-eyed Juncos Junco hyemalis. And Black-capped Chickadees Poecile atricapillus.

https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/miriam-and-harriss-hawk.html
Saturday, 18 July 2015. Miriam and a Harris's Hawk. On Wednesday evening a pot luck supper was held for the volunteers of the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus. Fledge watch. Chris and Karen von Knobloch kindly hosted this event and it was attended by many of the regular falcon monitors. Rudy Kruppa, the falconer involved with our team, brought a couple of his birds with him, and everyone was able to have close and intimate encounters with a Harris's Hawk Parabuteos unicinctus. 18 July 2015 at 07:15.

Travels With Birds: October 2014
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 28 October 2014. Although very mild for the time of year the day was wet with some heavy rain, a little drizzle and a few sunny intervals. Drawn as I am to wetlands, I decided once again to see what I could find. My visit to Laurentian Wetland was very satisfactory. For the most part the rain held off, although the sky was grey and overcast most of the time. Several species of duck have recently arrived and a careful search turned up a great variety of waterfowl. Canada Goose Branta canadensis.

Travels With Birds: More Flowers
https://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015/07/more-flowers.html
Thursday, 9 July 2015. As mentioned in my last post most birds are involved with procreation at this time of year, with photographic opportunities relatively scant unless one is near an expanse of water. So, I have focused my efforts of late on wildflowers and the results are shown below. Birdsfoot Trefoil Lotus corniculatus. Another introduced species which can be commonly found is Cow Vetch Vicia cracca. And it too was introduced and has multiplied profusely. The Red Osier Cornus stolonifera,. In the s...
