Travels With Birds

Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Red-footed Falcon in Staffordshire, England. I have just returned from a birding trip to the UK and have begun the task of downloading and editing almost 1,500 pictures. When that is all done I will begin to write my trip report, but in the meantime this species deserves its own coverage. A Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus. The bird found the piles of horse manure convenient perches and the manure probably also attracted the insects upon which this species feeds. I am indebted...

Travels With Birds: August 2015

http://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, 27 August 2015. Helping a Bird Bander. Kevin Grundy and Ross Dickson are a formidable pair when it comes to bird banding, having many, many years of experience between them, with a whole range of bird families. However, they can only band together on the weekends because while Ross, like me, is retired, Kevin still has to work for a living and is thus not available on week days. Tennessee Warbler Leiothlypis peregrina. Common Yellowthroat Setophaga aestiva. Red-eyed Vireo Vireo olivaceus. New W...

Travels With Birds: October 2014

http://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 28 October 2014. Although very mild for the time of year the day was wet with some heavy rain, a little drizzle and a few sunny intervals. Drawn as I am to wetlands, I decided once again to see what I could find. My visit to Laurentian Wetland was very satisfactory. For the most part the rain held off, although the sky was grey and overcast most of the time. Several species of duck have recently arrived and a careful search turned up a great variety of waterfowl. Canada Goose Branta canadensis.

Travels With Birds: June 2015

http://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 June 2015. No doubt some of you will recall that I mentioned that my good friend Karen von Knobloch had permitted me to use her pictures from the falcon watch on my recent blog post. When I asked her if I might use her photographs on my blog she acquiesced without a moment's hesitation. Now that the period of our our daily vigilance is drawing to a close, Karen has created this poster of the entire peregrine family which she is permitting me to share with all of you. Thank you Karen for your ...

Travels With Birds: December 2014

http://travelswithbirds.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 29 December 2014. Red-bellied Woodpecker (Pic à ventre roux). Red-bellied Woodpecker Melanerpes carolinus. Is one of only two members of the genus Melanerpes. Found in our area. Over the past twenty years or so it has expanded dramatically and is now verging on common in this region. In fact, from the completion of the first Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas in the mid 1980s to the termination of the second atlas for the years 2001 - 2005 the population had increased by about 250% province-wide. On Blu...

Tarjan turinoita: joulukuuta 2014

http://tarjanturinoita.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Keskiviikko 24. joulukuuta 2014. Nu är det Jul! Lauantai 20. joulukuuta 2014.

I am on twitching quest. Monday, 22 June 2009. 8220;If good is what youre looking for, good is what youll find. Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio. To celebrate growing older, he once wrote the 45 lessons life taught him. He’s turned 90 and here they are once again for all to learn…. 1       Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2       When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3       Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 18     ...19  &#1...20&#160...

As The Crow Flies - a Hong Kong Birding Blog. Birds in Hong Kong and slightly further afield. Birding in Hong Kong. Mai Po Nature Reserve. Wednesday, 31 December 2014. The one and a half hour I waited there was not pleasant.I dare say my worst birding experience ever. With photographers constantly talking so loudly that I am sure people from the sports field could hear them! Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher (record shot). I know this will be the best chance for me to finally nail this bogie bird. Mai Po w...

I am on twitching quest. Tuesday, 24 January 2012. Birds in my Yard. Nashik. As expected the stay in nashik for whatever time - was likely to be a busy one. All the same I am lucky enough that there are enough birds in my yard to keep me busy and occupied. This sunday was a great one with goo sightings. Though the birds did try their best to test my paitence - but then I could shoot a couple of them to my satisfaction. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Birder's Blog...: July 2015

http://cheemablog.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

I am on twitching quest. Saturday, 25 July 2015. Get a life: Start with Bird Watching. I have been birding for a fairly long time and I have come across these repeated questions. As I sit doing nothing today I thought why not try and reply for a larger audience. The questions to start with are simple but with no straightforward replies. So let me deal with them as I deem fit. What is bird watching? How do I get started? If the answer is no then its time to take off some time from whatever you thought was...

Fraser's Hill - 2/11/2014 - 3/11/2014. It gave us some excellent views for over ten minutes before going back into the cover of the forest. Just as we thought our luck couldn’t get better a flock of Sultan Tits dropped by to a short tree and gave very close views of this canopy dwelling species for our enjoyment. The poor bird was disorient...

Friday, January 16, 2015. How did you train Bliss to do that? Every day, someone asks me how I got Bliss to "do that," whether it's basic obedience, amazing tricks or even sporting a pair of sunglasses! What motivates your dog most? Usually it is food, but toys and praise are two more motivators to put in your training toolbox. Many people are reluctant to train with treats, but why leave out the most powerful motivator, when once a behavior is solid, you can wean your dog off them? Which behavior earned...
