Gower Wildlife: January 2015

Otter feeding in Fall Bay. I watched it diving for fish for a few minutes and then it surfaced with a pretty big fish (250-300mm long, I guess). It then swam towards the mouth of the bay and disappeared under water for a short time.Soon afterwards it appeared on the rocks under Tears Point, at the outer edge of Fall Bay, and spent about eight minutes eating the fish before sliding back into the sea. I feel I was very lucky to see this happening and to be able to photograph it. Otter feeding in Fall Bay.

Gower Wildlife: December 2014
http://goweros.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
A Starling Spectacular at Pwll, Llanelli. However, the flock then seemed to continue flying approximately westwards and may. Have alighted in the Ashpits Pond area but, equally, the flock may have continued onwards to roost in Pembrey Forest or elsewhere. Presumably, yesterday`s big flock (which, at a conservative estimate, was 5000 ) was weather-driven from harsher conditions elsewhere in the UK or the Continent. Apologies for the lack of activity in recent months - rest assured I have not abandoned the...

Gower Wildlife: Chough report
http://goweros.blogspot.com/2015/06/chough-report.html
Pair A has produced four juveniles. These birds are all without rings. This family is still sticking pretty close to the nest site and is quite difficult to observe. This will change over the next few days and they will make their presence very obvious. Pair A defending their territory near to where the juveniles are hidden. The ringed adult telling me it's time I left the area, in late May. One of the ringed juveniles of Pair B. The other ringed juvenile of Pair B. This has also been a good year for Sto...

Gower Wildlife: A Walk in the Park....
http://goweros.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-walk-in-park.html
A Walk in the Park. I had to take someone for a regular appointment at Singleton Hospital today so, rather than spending my time in the waiting room, I took a short walk in the adjacent Singleton Park and the grounds of the university. There has been some clearance within the wooded gardens immediately north of the university, and I chanced upon about half-a-dozen plants of small balsam Impatiens parviflora. Elsewhere in the park, I noticed water bent Polypogon viridis. And I wish that Carmarthenshire wo...

Gower Wildlife: Mewslade Fulmars breeding
http://goweros.blogspot.com/2015/07/mewslade-fulmars-breeding.html
An adult at the nest site, incubating in June this year. The chick in the same place, today, July 30. A closer view of the chick. This is progress compared to last year and I do hope that this young bird will make it. It will probably fledge at the end of August or beginning of September (the fledging period is around 46-51 days). It is therefore essential that there is no climbing on Lewes Castle until September. Anyone who does climb there before then will probably kill this bird. A Walk in the Park.

An opulence of willow blossom. An easy-to-identify willow is the almond willow Salix triandra. It is a small willow and always floriferous - making it perhaps suitable for a wild garden and, like all willows (except the native S.cinerea. It is easily propagated from cuttings. The density of flowers (note that it has three stamens per floret, hence the specific epiphet ` triandra. Must surely also make it a good moth lure early in the season. Above: a general view of one of the Pwll almond willows. Initia...

Steve Hinton Wildlife Photography. Local Wildlife Photography And From Further Afield. South Africa . 9 - 23 September 2009 Alex Bevan, Phil Edmonds, Russ Eynon and Steve Hinton. A trip to South Africa had been on the radar for quite a while. Whilst we originally planned to visit the Western Cape the lure of Big Mammals proved too strong. We eventually ended up spending 9 nights in the Cape Town area before flying to Johannesburg for a further 4 nights in Kruger National Park. We resisted the temptation ...
