AGATES - ORBICULAR JASPER - PETRIFIED WOOD. WHAT IS AN AGATE? How about a little technical information. Info provided by http:/ www.agatelady.com/agate-basics.html. HOW DO AGATES FORM? Carnelian agate with banding found on Damon Pt., Ocean Shores, WA. This is the most common and distinctive type of agate. In these agates, bands crystallized into concentric layers that more or less follow the shape of the cavity. The banding resembles an aerial view of a fort. Olympic Peninsula - Rialto Beach, LaPush, WA. Rialto Beach looking north. Basalt rock beds on Rialto Beach. Jasper presents as a bright red rock that stands out on the gray expanse of basalt. Orbicular Jasper, however, is even more pronounced with it's red orbs on a black background coloration. Add the wet surf environment and the Orbicular Jasper really stands out on the beach! After about an hour and a half of searching for agates I had a bulging pocket full of orbicular jasper. Agates from Rialto Beach.

Special group outings to specific beaches for interested beach combers. Details will be posted below. Meet at North Beach parking lot in Port Townsend at 9:00-9:15am. See the directions to North Beach in Port Townsend posted in the field report about Glass Beach. We'll hike 3 miles to the west out to McCurdy Point and the Glass Beach area. We'll return in the afternoon as each desires. Rubber boots (if desired), lunch, 2 water bottles, rain gear, hand sized garden rake. No special passes required.

Quilting is an amazing precision art form that I will always appreciate. Those sweet birds were added with an embroidery machine.
