Produce By Paula: March 2012

http://producebypaula.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

My journey to self-sufficiency. Sunday, 18 March 2012. Don't know how, but I managed to miss a parsnip when I thought I had dug them all up earlier in the week. I spotted a lush green tuft in the raised bed this morning and upon further investigation discovered this stocky root underneath. As I type it is parboiling and will be getting a roasting in rosemary and honey as a lovely addition to tonight's dinner. I think that is definitely the last one now so intend to enjoy it. Produce By Paula: June 2012

http://producebypaula.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

My journey to self-sufficiency. Saturday, 30 June 2012. Well, not quite; although we have had a couple of punnets worth of strawberries so far this year. This batch was picked today. It is a constant battle to beat the slugs and there are so many more that they get to first. they don't even eat the whole fruit, but damage them just enough to make them unfit for human consumption! Then the woodlice get in there and have a go at the decomposing ones. Labels: Grow Your Own. Planted out in the autumn were pu...

Produce By Paula: April 2012

http://producebypaula.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

My journey to self-sufficiency. Sunday, 1 April 2012. Very successful germination of cucurbits has taken place in the greenhouse; 3 black beauty. 2 tondo di toscana and 2 zucchini. I'm still waiting for the all green bush and gold rush to show. In cucumber news, 4 mini-whites have germinated. Even the outdoor wonder melons have come through; although I've managed to get them to the flower stage before but never got them to fruit. this year we shall see. Labels: Grow Your Own. Produce By Paula: January 2013

http://producebypaula.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

My journey to self-sufficiency. Sunday, 27 January 2013. Let's get this sow(ing) on the road! It's been quite a nice weekend, apart from the torrential wind and rain overnight on Saturday (when I wouldn't have been doing much gardening anyway! So, got started with a bit of sowing; 3 each of moneymaker, gardener's delight, red cherry, green zebra and cream sausage, along with some mustard and cress which surprisingly I have never grown before. Labels: Grow Your Own. Sunday, 13 January 2013. So, finally go...

Produce By Paula: Sowing Schedule 2011

http://producebypaula.blogspot.com/p/sowing-schedule-2011.html

My journey to self-sufficiency. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I have been growing vegetables (and a bit of fruit) in my back garden since the 2008 growing season. It is something I have always wanted to have a go at and one day hope to be self sufficient. I decided to create this blog to track my progress and share with everyone how I am getting on. Hope you enjoy reading. Is provided by the Met Office. A very productive day. Re-sowing and potting on. Brand New Potting Shed.

Paula's Kitchen: The Verdict

http://paulainthekitchen.blogspot.com/2010/12/verdict.html

Making the most of my home-grown produce. Tuesday, 28 December 2010. I finally got round to trying some of my preserves over Christmas and have to say I was extremely pleased with the results. Tomato and pepper relish really did taste as good as something you could buy in the shops - I can't wait to try it on a burger. Pickled green tomatoes were quite sweet, I was expecting them to taste more like pickles. They are lovely with both cheese and ham. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). So, I decided to cre...

Making the most of my home-grown produce. Tuesday, 5 January 2010. High Hopes for 2010. So, this year I have high hopes for my produce. Along with tomatoes for chutney, my speciality ;-) I am hoping to grow enough cranberries for sauce, redcurrants for jelly, blackcurrants for jam, and beetroot, onions, red cabbage and gherkins for pickling. yes a tall order, but I guess it's better to aim high. Fingers crossed that the growing season is a good one. 4lb (2Kg) Green Tomatoes. 1/2oz (15g) Fresh root ginger.

Paula's Kitchen: August 2010

http://paulainthekitchen.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Making the most of my home-grown produce. Sunday, 1 August 2010. I made another batch of cucumber and apple chutney yesterday, but this time I followed the recipe more closely, so I used. 2 lb cooking apples. 1 pint malt vinegar. 1 lb demerara sugar. 1 tsp cayenne pepper. I also used a food processor, so the ingredients were finely chopped rather than chunky. I also pickled some more of them a week or so ago. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Hope you enjoy reading. Making the most of my home-grown produce. Sunday, 18 July 2010. Cucumber and Apple Chutney (Spicy). Cucumbers keep on coming, so I was back in the kitchen earlier in the week to make a chutney. This is what I used:. 1/2 pint malt vinegar. 1/2 lb sugar (was supposed to be demerara, but I didn't have enough so mixed it with granulated). 1 tsp salt (was supposed to be 1/2 tsp - doesn't seem to have affected it though). This is what I did:. Put it all into a pan with the vinegar and brought to the boil.

Paula's Kitchen: September 2010

http://paulainthekitchen.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Making the most of my home-grown produce. Sunday, 5 September 2010. I pickled some chilli peppers today, which simply involved removing from the plant, making sure they were clean and blemish free, putting them in a sterilised jar and covering them with pickling vinegar. easy peasy! In the past I have just left them to dry out, but I thought I would try preserving them differently this year. So, what do you do when a pumpkin peaks far too early? Turn it into chutney of course. 1 1/2 lbs pumpkin. Sweeter ...

http://paulainthekitchen.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Making the most of my home-grown produce. Saturday, 27 August 2011. Technically, I haven't made anything because I used ready-made pickling vinegar, but I'm still posting up my pickled chillies (apache and cheyenne). Traffic Light Chilli Jam. Following the success of my chilli jam last year I decided to experiment a bit this year and try making traffic light chilli jam. I more or less followed the same recipe as last time which for one batch is:. 600ml vinegar (I used either white wine or cider). So, I d...

Produce By Paula

My journey to self-sufficiency. Friday, 6 May 2016. I finally feel as if I have caught up with everything; all of the fruit and veg I had planned to grow this year is now underway. some of it a fair bit later than previous years, but who says those dates are rigid anyway? Today, I finally sowed carrots (nantes 5 and autumn king) and parsnips (albion). I also came across an unopened packet of butternut squash which had a sow by date of 2016; there were only 5 seeds so I thought I may as well sow them all.
