About me I am a Devon-based Naturalist. For the last seven years I worked as a ranger on nature reserves managed by East Devon District Council, however I've recently started a new role with The Donkey Sanctuary to help deliver conservation projects on its substantial UK landholding - a fabulous new challenge! October | 2010 | The Wild Diary

https://rangerjames.wordpress.com/2010/10

James Chubb, Wildlife Ranger. Monthly Archives: October 2010. The thing with sharing one’s enthusiasm about the natural world, is that those profound Wow moments are often all-too brief and lose something of their impact through interpretation. The mental picture and the associated story may well be vivid and compelling, but as we have all become so accustomed to the privileged insights of programmes such as BBC1’s. We need a bit more to really whet our appetite. Parasitic wasps with the longest oviposit...

James Chubb, Wildlife Ranger. Monthly Archives: November 2010. Last week saw the launch of the third and final film in the think trilogy. This time the team concentrated on energy consumption and climate change and the film was titled EcoLogic . The preamble before the film screening put the project in context with regard to the Geography curriculum; most importantly the following passage from the Geography curriculum was quoted, and I would like to share it with you now:. Of course, just because the fil...

October | 2011 | The Wild Diary

https://rangerjames.wordpress.com/2011/10

James Chubb, Wildlife Ranger. Monthly Archives: October 2011. This year I toddled off for my holidays in early July. I rather innocently termed this break my ‘summer’ holiday, as it happened to fall at a time of year when the earth’s axial tilt during its annual orbit of the sun produced longer daylight hours and historically higher average temperatures. Looks like I chose the wrong summer month to take a beach holiday, I should have booked October! People lay strewn across the beach, the sun beat down a...

James Chubb, Wildlife Ranger. Monthly Archives: September 2010. Daydreaming with the fishes. Sometimes in the course of my rangering duties, pretty often in fact, I have cause to feel very lucky indeed. Last monday was just one such moment. I joined a team of enthusiastic foodies and fishermen on a Catch and Cook event, organised by Dart’s Farm. What a superb day, which showcased our local coast and countryside to its fullest. Its important to point out now my life history of fishing, it wont take long&#...

September | 2011 | The Wild Diary

https://rangerjames.wordpress.com/2011/09

James Chubb, Wildlife Ranger. Monthly Archives: September 2011. Once in a lifetime! It’s not often an extinct species turns up breeding on your nature reserve. All too infrequently if you ask me. But that’s what’s happened this week (this minute to be perfectly honest) and I am very proud to be able to bring you the news here in this column. The species in question has been officially extinct in the UK for the last 60 years and this will be the first confirmed breeding of this beetle ever in mainland Bri...

Last year, we bought a butterfly garden from InsectLore. Looking at the underside of snails. Regular users of this site will have noticed that the frequency of my posts dropped significantly just over two and a half years ago. This was about the time my daughter Isabella was born and I became a very busy person! And even my daughter has the potential of suffering from that because she equally appreciates the iPad! I have strategically placed the birdfeeders in a place that we could see from the dining ta...
