The Road of a Horse Trainer

The Road of a Horse Trainer. My journey to becoming a professional horseman. Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Latigos and Cinches: how to store them so that they're handy and out of the way. This is something that I've seen a lot over the years and it always sort of bothered me because there is a much easier way to do things. I see folks unsaddle their horses and leave the cinches just hanging down so that they'd drag on the ground whenever they carry the saddle. Another thing that's pretty commonly seen is t...

The Road of a Horse Trainer: November 2011

http://www.robertsontraining.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

The Road of a Horse Trainer. My journey to becoming a professional horseman. Friday, November 18, 2011. The importance of basics. Everyone always says how important the basics are when you are training young horses but so many people overlook them in the hopes of getting quick results. My thinking is that if you do everything the way you should in the first month or two, then the horse should be willing to just accept anything new you ask them to do. I guess the moral of my story is that if you get a hor...

The Road of a Horse Trainer: Teaching "Cruise Control"

http://www.robertsontraining.blogspot.com/2012/05/teaching-cruise-control.html

The Road of a Horse Trainer. My journey to becoming a professional horseman. Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Now, I am not a western pleasure trainer. I simply train good horses that are calm, consistent, and controlled. My Dad trained show horses back in the day before the peanut roller fad and he trained his share of champion WP horses and what he learned riding them is what he passed on down to me. You are ready to start working on controlling that speed. Now, this can either be done in an arena while working c...

The Road of a Horse Trainer. My journey to becoming a professional horseman. Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Bridle for a baby? I have often been asked how I get my horses to the point that they won't ever quit when I ask them to do something and I have done quite a bit of thinking about that recently. I thought it might be a good thing to share at the start of this whole thing so that people can get an idea of my mentality in regards to training. Where are my buddies? OH, it's a horse eating bush! People ask...

Hoof Prints and Far Away Dreams: Barn Thoughts

http://hoofprintsandfarawaydreams.blogspot.com/2013/12/barn-thoughts.html

Sunday, December 29, 2013. In the quiet mornings when I'm in the barn, mucking Siaga's stall and whatnot, I have lots of time to think. Today I thought about some revelations found in a book I'm currently reading ( Hiking Through: One Man's Journey to Peace and Freedom on the Appalachian Trail. If you can't carry it in your heart or on your back, you probably don't need it" -Sir Enity, another fellow hiker. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A little more insane than usual. Hoof Prints and Far Away Dreams: January 2013

http://hoofprintsandfarawaydreams.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Just ride the trot! So today at the barn I took Siaga to the indoor for a little bareback ride. I had my helmet, Siaga had his halter and a leadrope looped around his neck and tied at the clasp like reins on a bosal. I'll show you fast! But today, he was like "Oh, trot? Ok" And he took a few pattering strides and stopped, and I praised him wholeheartedly. And we kept doing it until we got a span of trotting half way around the indoor. It was lovely! Hoof Prints and Far Away Dreams: Eye of the Horse

http://hoofprintsandfarawaydreams.blogspot.com/2014/05/eye-of-horse.html

Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Eye of the Horse. Just popping in to share this absolutely stunning photo I took of Siaga's eye. Getting him to hold still is a horribly difficult challenge! But somehow, the Horse Gods and Goddesses smiled upon me yesterday when I toted my camera up to a very curious horse. This photo is, by way, available for sale as a high quality print here. Hoof Prints and Far Away Dreams: March 2014

http://hoofprintsandfarawaydreams.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 14, 2014. Riding season is upon us! I bought a new saddle, bridle, breast collar, reins, saddle pad, girth, wither strap for the breast collar, and a few other things. In other words, an entirely new tack set, of the Western variety. The saddle fits well, though it's a smidge long and certainly makes him look so tiny! But then again, he is tiny! Siaga was also so *thrilled* to be my coat hanger for a few minutes while I prepared to switch out his bridle for his halter. At least I can 10...

Hoof Prints and Far Away Dreams: October 2013

http://hoofprintsandfarawaydreams.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 25, 2013. Saving for a Rainy Day. So I've been saving my money. I've got a savings account that I opened with a mere $100 and I add to it every pay day. This savings account is my "Rainy Day" fund. But I don't mean "Rainy Day" like "in case of emergency." No, indeed. In other news, Siaga is getting fat and is a happy hoofer, and while I don't necessarily want him fat, I prefer fat over winter than skin and bones over winter, of course, so we're stocking up as much as we can. :). Plans for...

Mike's Training Blog

Tuesday, September 30, 2008. As I mentioned in my blog post today, things are going really well. My body comp is improving, my strength is getting better, and orthopedically I feel really good (knocks on wood). Here's a brief rundown of the past four sessions:. Reverse Band Bench (green band). 5x275, 285, 295. While I have no intentions of doing a meet soon, I figure it's a good idea to get some heavy weights in my hands. My warm-ups and first set felt terrible, though. The reason? 5x245, 295, 335. Good ...
