Running for Bacon

Sunday, October 2, 2011. Delivering My First 50k. For me, running a 50k for the first time was a little like being pregnant—I was looking forward to it more before it actually happened, I spent way too much energy just trying to stay upright, and at a certain point I just wished like hell it was already over. Near the beginning of the trail. My husband and I chose the Baker Lake 50k. One of the numerous bridges. Me leading the way over a river crossing in the mist. We agreed that we would both run our ow...

Running for Bacon: May 2011

http://www.runningforbacon.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 20, 2011. My Teeny Tiny Tri. Not as good. I had, however, already paid my entry fee and I really wanted the t-shirt, which was a real "finishers" shirt and not available for simple purchase by a slightly over-weight graduate student mother unless she actually completed an hour of what suddenly seemed to be torturous physical activity. Wonder Twin powers activate! Friday, May 13, 2011. Put a Bird on it: An ugly race shirt, but a beautiful race. Awesome logo not located on shirt. From New Zeala...

Running for Bacon: Not Far from the Tree

http://www.runningforbacon.blogspot.com/2011/06/not-far-from-tree.html

Wednesday, June 8, 2011. Not Far from the Tree. The Hippie Chick Half Marathon is always on Mother's Day weekend. This year Mother's Day was even better because my four-year-old daughter got to participate in the kids' race. I often get comments that Gemma looks like me, but the weekend's festivities confirmed that she also inherited a startling array of my personality traits. (This was an appropriate revelation considering I recently discovered I am turning into my mother.). I don't even have a chance?

Running for Bacon: April 2010

http://www.runningforbacon.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 30, 2010. Sometimes Mother Nature conspires against you, and sometimes you just screw things up all by yourself. Mental note: do not share a pitcher of PBR the night before a race. Maybe it's just me, but carbo-loading with beer (though delicious and fun) inevitably means I will have to carbo un. Load in the morning. Finally, much relieved, I trotted over to the start line to make sure I could start with the 5k'ers. Not so, they said. I would have to start immediately for my chip to...I did...

Friday, June 17, 2011. Danny Abshire is a Genius! Danny Abshire, the force behind Newton Running Shoes. And the author of Natural Running. Is my new hero. I have made previous forays into minimalist running, with mixed results. After reading Born to Run. I went out and bought myself a pair of Vibram Five Fingers. To wear if I am feeling particularly fatigued because they are a neutral shoe with "dynamic support," that is, fairly fluid support as opposed to rigid stabilizers. Ball when you can grip it wit...

Come join me on my crafting journey. Tuesday, 12 February 2013. Our Mosaic Pathway Work in Progress Part Two. We just finished off another section of our mosaic pathway, so I thought it was time for another update. We had to take a bit of a break from it over the winter, although Mr K has added a few sections since I last blogged about it. I thought today I would share a few do's and don'ts that we've learnt along the way. DON'T use quick set concrete mix! DO check the weather forecast. DO use your favou...

Well, I like to plan my quilts too. But, while I'm working things don't always go to plan.at the time, this usually causes me more than a little frustration, but in the end it usually works out better than I had imagined. I'd meant for them to go anticlockwise, not clockwise! How could I have been so careless? There was a little seren...

On Thursday, so we had a party on Saturday and I made a puppy cake. As usual, my plans got more elaborate the more I thought about it, and they did have to get scaled back a bit when I ran out of time and energy (and also realised that some of my plans simply wouldn't fit! But I'm very happy with the final result! The flowers...

Come join me on my crafting journey. Monday, 4 February 2013. Quilting Tutorial 4 Quilt backing from narrow fabric. Have you ever noticed that your finished quilt tops tend to be just that much wider than the backing fabric you want to buy? When I first started quilting, I would have bought twice the length I needed so that I could add that narrow strip to make the backing wide enough. But what do you know, you don't need to! I hear you ask. Well, here's the trick. And there you have it! The finished wid...

Come join me on my crafting journey. Tuesday, 17 December 2013. On learning from our mistakes. I've been sewing for thirty odd years and I'm sure you'll believe me when I say I've made plenty of mistakes. We're supposed to learn from our mistakes, right? But there are a couple of mistakes that I just never seem to learn from, no matter how often I make them. It's going to be one of Miss Missy's presents, so I'll share a photo of it after Christmas, when I can get her to model it. Bronwen @ BK Crafts.

Give to Running for Ayrie. Nora has said the 16th of February should be used to celebrate Ayrie’s life, which is exactly what Richard and I will do today. Nora’s sister has asked that we remember a particular memory or recent dream we’ve had of Ayrie. I’ll share one memory about one of the first times we baby-sat the boys. Ayrie went through a period of jumping on the bed…although do kids every grow out of that? So if you too want to remember Ayrie today, my silly advice is to act like kid! And Richard a...
