Shorebirding: July 2010

http://shorebirding.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Travels of a birder on the shores of Lake Ontario. Monday, July 12, 2010. This summer, I have been helping out at two MAPS stations. MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) stations are set up to run during the summer months and you must visit them once in every 10-day period. When visiting, you must set up mist-nets for bird banding and open them a half-hour before sunrise. Then, you check the nets for birds every half hour for six hours. Makes it a second-year bird. My Birding Life List.

Shorebirding: January 2011

http://shorebirding.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Travels of a birder on the shores of Lake Ontario. Monday, January 31, 2011. Super Bowl of Birding. So I am finally starting this blog up again after basically a half-year hiatus, so that is definitely good. I hope to update the blog fairly often regarding birding trips and news. Next, we took off for Flax Pond in Lynn, where we were going for a Northern Shoveler (5-point bird! A view from the north side of Nahant. Carolina Wren at Nahant. Of Red-necked Grebes, not something you see very often. Thanks to...

Shorebirding: March 2012

http://shorebirding.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Travels of a birder on the shores of Lake Ontario. Saturday, March 10, 2012. Again, trying to get my blog up and running again now that I have some time to maintain it. Brad Carlson, Doug Daniels and I went up to see the previously reported Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch in southern Lewis County, NY. We stopped for coffee on our way up in the morning and as we were leaving, we spotted a Cackling Goose in a flock of Canada Geese. They are so small! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). http://birdersflightlog.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

A running journal of my adventures as a young birder. Sunday, November 18, 2012. And you Thought Bird ID was Hard. A Harlequin Darner- Or is it? I concluded that this bug was probably a harlequin darner based mostly on the fact that they are more common, and I had never seen Taper-tailed before, but I realized that I was pretty much impossible to be certain. I began to try to puzzle out my dragonfly. Now the key field mark is found on the wings, so I zoomed in there a bit:. Wednesday, November 7, 2012.

A running journal of my adventures as a young birder. Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Spoiler Alert: The blog post is about this bird. I saw it. Sorry to ruin the surprise. After a few days without reports and stormy weekend, I had assumed the bird had either moved on or passed on, but yesterday morning Massbird once again had an email with the subject line "Painted Bunting Yes." This time I had a full afternoon, and Harold and I set off on the 86 bus into the wilds of Boston. Yeah" "Did it look green?

A running journal of my adventures as a young birder. Friday, August 31, 2012. A friend recently mentioned to me that I hadn't talked about birds on this blog since March (! And I was surprised to realize that he was right. Unfortunately, that drought will continue for now, since although I got back from 12 days birding in. Shorebirder

Friday, August 7, 2015. Yesterday evening Julian Hough and I spent a couple hours walking out Sandy Point in West Haven, CT. It was a nice night to be out, and there were a good number of shorebirds around too. Even a bit of variety! A nice count of 12 Willets (9 juv Eastern, 3 juv Western) were a highlight. Red Knot and White-rumped Sandpiper can be scarce around here, so those were nice to see. And the first fresh juvenile peep of the year are always delightful. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Most of the jaeg...

Migrations

Field research in temperate South America (for the most part). Wednesday, January 21, 2009. Before I left, many people asked me what the food was like. I found it difficult to describe and now I know why. Most of the food is, in a word, bland. This is not to offend anyone, but. And most countries in. Are not known for their use of spices. Salt is the preferred spice. When Brett was here, he concocted pastry crust from the rice flour and cornstarch and it was wonderful for a quiche. We usually prepare one...
