Shorebirder

Friday, August 7, 2015. Yesterday evening Julian Hough and I spent a couple hours walking out Sandy Point in West Haven, CT. It was a nice night to be out, and there were a good number of shorebirds around too. Even a bit of variety! A nice count of 12 Willets (9 juv Eastern, 3 juv Western) were a highlight. Red Knot and White-rumped Sandpiper can be scarce around here, so those were nice to see. And the first fresh juvenile peep of the year are always delightful. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Shorebirder: April 2015

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 20, 2015. Last Wednesday afternoon was a spectacular one along the West Haven shoreline. I celebrated taking (and let's just assume *passing*) my board re-certification that morning by enjoying a couple lunchtime margaritas with a friend followed by some time in the sand with my gear. Bright sun and temps well into the 60s had quite a few people doing the same.most minus cameras and scopes though. Other than the killer "Kamchatka" MEW GULL at Oyster River. This summer-like evening called fo...

Shorebirder: Cascades and east (June 25-26)

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/cascades-and-east-june-25-26.html

Monday, July 6, 2015. Cascades and east (June 25-26). On my fourth or fifth check of the road I noticed something that was not there before. I headed in the direction the tracks were pointing, and after no more than five minutes I spotted a male Spruce Grouse about 15 feet off the ground feeding in a [presumed] fir. Male "Franklin's" Spruce Grouse. View of Mount Rainier. Handheld iPhone-scope of Common Poorwill at dusk. I spent all of today on the east side of the Cascades, starting all the way east of t...

Shorebirder: Birds I "need" in Connecticut

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/08/birds-i-need-in-connecticut.html

Sunday, August 2, 2015. Birds I "need" in Connecticut. A couple similarities with Black Rail here - declining on the east coast (though not drastically, as far as I know), and seen most often as a spring overshoot. Wilson's Plover is a bird of sandy beaches, so should be looked for at places like Milford Point and Sandy Point. Anytime in May is worth looking specifically for this species. I missed my chance during Hurricane Sandy! May have missed my chance this past winter, when several were kicking arou...

Shorebirder: May 2015

http://www.shorebirder.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Big Day - 191 species - May 19, 2015. Things have been pretty busy on my end over the past month, but not too busy to squeeze in a Big Day with the usual crew - Patrick Dugan, Frank Gallo, Dave Tripp, and Fran Zygmont. Below is a brief synopsis. 2011 - 192 (CT state record). 2012 - off year for me. 2014 - 188, 188 (two separate days). As always, we tried to be flexible with choosing the day itself, leaving the decision to the last minute based on weather and scouting results. O...

Dermot Breen's Blog: February 2015

http://dermotbreen.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2015. California 3rd February 2015. We spent the afternoon at a nearby local park where several Varied Thrushes had bee reported on eBird. We eventually managed to catch up with a few individuals but they were rather elusive in nature. California has experienced a bit of an influx of this species this winter and they are often difficult to come across in normal winters. We also had our first Califronia Towhees, White-throated Swifts, Red-shouldered Hawks and Goshawk. US Navy Sea Hawk.

bird life: Things I am grateful for today

http://birdsandlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/things-i-am-grateful-for-today.html

Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Saturday, November 17, 2012. Things I am grateful for today. The sun's surprise reminder of warmth on my face when I step into the backyard after lurking in bed sick with a cold. That the starling sitting at the top of the spruce tree soaking up the rays doesn't feel remotely offended that my immediate thought upon resolving its shape into something I recognize is "Oh, just a starling". bird life: The most disturbing shot of a Tufted Titmouse you have ever seen

http://birdsandlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-most-disturbing-shot-of-tufted.html

Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Sunday, November 18, 2012. The most disturbing shot of a Tufted Titmouse you have ever seen. Thank you, auto-focus, for completely blurring the Black-capped Chickadee I was attempting to photograph. Were you trying to send me a message? Were you trying to warn me of the true demonic intent of the chickadee's Tufted Titmouse ally? The bird looks as though it is planning - and capable of - world domination. Force of nature, chairwoman of the Great Gu...

bird life: Things I am grateful for on Thanksgiving

http://birdsandlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/things-i-am-grateful-for-on-thanksgiving.html

Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Thursday, November 22, 2012. Things I am grateful for on Thanksgiving. The clear New England sky, bare branches, the oxygen in my lungs, my heart beating in my chest, love and warmth and friends, acceptance, hope, life and memory and the fact that even those who are no longer taking in that oxygen and that crisp autumn sky are still here as long as they are in our memories. Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. The strangest scam in Bangkok? Namtok Mae Surin National Park, Mae Hong Son, northern Thailand. Asok district, Bangkok (thank you, Frank Gallo, for the pic). It is really a pity I didn't have a camera. Or perhaps the pity is that I took Art all the way to the. http://birdsandlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/emus-are-still-bit-scary.html

Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Tuesday, November 27, 2012. Emus are still a bit scary. Do you remember when you were little and certain animals seemed very, very big and scary? Thank heavens I didn't know then what I know now: that it's their claws they use for defense, and those claws are strong enough to rip metal fences, and if cornered they kick with their big, three-toed feet. http://birdsandlife.blogspot.com/2012/11/sod-off-ya-furry-bastard.html

Observations on birding and life, from a novice at both. Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Sod off, ya' furry bastard. Frank puts the first bird feeder out on the deck of our new place. "How long will it take before the birds find it? To me it sounds like a muppet on Valium, but judging by the effect it's having, this call is clearly very menacing to a rival nuthatch. In contrast to all the avian aggression, when a squirrel appears on the railing of the deck, it looks tremendously relaxed. Squirrels are SO CUT...

See you at sunrise...: May 2014

http://arcticory.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

See you at sunrise. First things first, at the end of the last post, I said I’d keep you posted once I identified this flower:. Turns out, it’s a Rock Jasmine. It seems to be pretty common; at least it’s distinct enough when I do see it. Anyway, I wasn’t guiding for most of today so I ventured out solo. First up, a female LONG-TAILED DUCK stretched her wings out on Weather Bureau Lake:. A check of the Polovina Wetlands yielded the ubiquitous RED-NECKED PHALAROPES:. Likewise, Lake Hill is aptly named:.

Shorebirding

Travels of a birder on the shores of Lake Ontario. Saturday, March 10, 2012. Again, trying to get my blog up and running again now that I have some time to maintain it. Brad Carlson, Doug Daniels and I went up to see the previously reported Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch in southern Lewis County, NY. We stopped for coffee on our way up in the morning and as we were leaving, we spotted a Cackling Goose in a flock of Canada Geese. They are so small! Friday, February 18, 2011. Signs of Spring in mid-February.
