Shropshire Birder

Monday, 10 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 5 - The late Great Shear Show! Another great evening on Sapphire, predictably unpredictable and whilst we remained Wilson's-less, there was plenty of excitement in store as the evening wore on and scent of chum brought the tubenoses in! The first brief encounter was with a Sooty Shearwate. And the first of the usual glut of Stormies. Then almost immediately, the star performer of the evening was Great Shearwate. R, in all at least five were seen! We were all hopi...

Shropshire Birder: September 2014

http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 23 September 2014. Kilnsea - Masked Shrike etc. I'd spent a long weekend in Scotland on plant duty noting the frenzied activity at Kilnsea with the discovery of a juv Masked Shrike! My first opportunity came on the Tuesday and with the crowds having died down, there were even parking spaces in the beach car park! Then down to business from the viewing point. The Masked Shrike. As ever, undaunted by distance, all the converters went on to try an eke something out of the day? Venus Pool - Peregrine.

Shropshire Birder: June 2015

Monday, 29 June 2015. Speyside - Shortie catch up! For anyone not following my twitter feed, I've just caught up with a few images of Short-eared Owl from Speyside - tucked away here! And 'Whose baby are you? No cheating - it's easy really (clue - taken on an upland moor) and the answer is here! They may not be speaking but this couple are making the most of peace and quiet on a Grouse moor - here. Other bits and pieces to follow! Saturday, 27 June 2015. RAF Cosford - Vulcan fly through. The Northern rou...

Shropshire Birder: March 2015

http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, 22 March 2015. Priorslee lake - Ring-necked Duck. I was up in Lancs on plant duty the previous day when Reevsey picked out this drake Ring-necked Duck during a morning session. Well done mate! Returning later that evening, I ticked it off at dusk and got over first thing hoping it had stayed to have it's picture taken? The light was appalling however - dark water, white water - nothing seemed to help! An occasional burst of sunshine! Now that's one duck that looks better paddling towards you.

Shropshire Birder: August 2015

http://shropshirebirder.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, 16 August 2015. Scilly pelagic no 8 - Great Shearwater in the scrum. Have shown amazingly well on this year's pelagics and it's easy to become complacent with just how spoilt everyone on the boat has been! There were 8 or 9 seen today, it was in the Fea's aftermath that this one showed he could hold his own in the rough and tumble of the feeding frenzy with the gulls! This scrum is not for the faint hearted! But always giving it a go. Stunning whilst gliding in to land! Seen from all angles.

http://bigvernsbirdingnosebag.blogspot.com/2011/05/early-morning-dots.html

Big Vern's Birding Nose Bag. Birding exploits and much more. Monday, 2 May 2011. Last night I got a call from Rob Stokes to tell me there were 9 Dotteral on the Long Mynd at their usual place by the gliding station. This has recently become an annual event. Me and/or Rob check the gliding station and get nothing then, a few days later, someone else finds them and we have to dash like mad men to see these lovely birds. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). http://bigvernsbirdingnosebag.blogspot.com/2011/06/norfolk-n-gold.html

Big Vern's Birding Nose Bag. Birding exploits and much more. Sunday, 5 June 2011. I had booked the half term holidays off to spend time with the family, before I did this, I had negotiated a days birding and had decided to go east with the hope of seeing some of my favourite birds. The Rain suddenly got harder and so we opted to dive in the nearest hide named “ Kingfisher hide”. We sat down and opened the shutters and within a minute a Kingfisher flew out from underneath the hide. Bel...The rain subsided...

Big Vern's Birding Nose Bag. Birding exploits and much more. Sunday, 4 December 2011. Heading East Gets West. Sponsored by Toffee Crisp. A recent piece of fortune was this Desert Wheatear, an addition to my Shropshire life list. This photo was taken on my belly due to the harsh winds that were whipping Titterstone Clee. I probably resembled a scene out of Frozen Planet (thinking Walrus here) but it got me the shot. Desert Wheatear, Titterstone Clee, Shropshire. Suddenly the flock got up and moved Left an...

http://bigvernsbirdingnosebag.blogspot.com/2011/06/shropshire-birds-and-butterflies.html

Big Vern's Birding Nose Bag. Birding exploits and much more. Wednesday, 22 June 2011. Shropshire Birds and Butterflies. Well it's that time of year when the birds dry up (except for Mega Scoters that I can't reach! And the insects come out (and bite me to death! But I thought I'd make the most of my set up and still managed to get some shots. Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary (underwing). Eventually the sun came out and we got the upper wing shots we were after. A cracking end to the day.

Alpines for the Enthusiast: February 2009

http://alpineenthusiast.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 14 February 2009. AGS South Wales Show. Despite the long cold winter conditions holding many plants in check, no less than 200 plants found their way onto the benches at Caerleon, South Wales! The premier award of a Farrer medal went to an amazing 30cm panful of Iris Kathryn Hodgkin, shown by Cyril Dart. Eric Jarrett staged an awesome pan of Iris hyrcana, rewarded by a certificate of merit! Or a close up of Hyacinthella glabrescens. A close run thing with a fine pan of 'Galanthus Whittington'.

Alpines for the Enthusiast: January 2013

http://alpineenthusiast.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 1 January 2013. Happy New Year Snowdrops! Just two more 'must have' Snowdrops which in a milder year would be open on Christmas day. Mine missed this by a few days but I took in some 'earlies' in a friends garden, where they were flowering well, right through the Christmas period. Is of Irish origin but grows just as well over here! Maybe one of the finest early season drops for vigour and a dependable show - just look how well this is doing? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Happy New Year Snowdrops!
