Sometimes It's Practical: Garden room

http://www.sometimesitspractical.blogspot.com/2007/07/garden-room.html

Children grow up: house evolves. This is about how we tackle the practical stuff around here. Sunday, July 1, 2007. This is July's job I think. We divided up the (unused) old Grimston garage with a pine-clad partition wall a couple of years ago,. Roofed it in corrugated perspex and built french doors onto the little garden at the back with perspex doors, to keep the cost and risk of accidents down. The panels are bolted together like this:. If the roof holds this winter, we'll invest in pine cladding for...

Sometimes It's Practical: Finally, I understand

http://www.sometimesitspractical.blogspot.com/2007/12/finally-i-understand.html

Children grow up: house evolves. This is about how we tackle the practical stuff around here. Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Finally, I understand. I've been researching how chimneys work and have found this excellent website. Which answers all my questions. Why am I researching chimneys? We're planning to have a new house built and we're thinking through ideas for the design of it. I love the idea of a completely open fire, like this one:. Posted by Gill at 4:19 PM. Oh, I'm liking Sometimes it's Practical!

Sometimes It's Practical: Stuck tap

http://www.sometimesitspractical.blogspot.com/2007/08/stuck-tap.html

Children grow up: house evolves. This is about how we tackle the practical stuff around here. Friday, August 17, 2007. We're installing a new shower and problem number one is that tap controlling the water feed to the shower is jammed open. Have found a website. Advising some WD40 (Doh! We should have thought of that! So trying that now. Also we tried to turn off the household water supply, but that's outide and flooded. Another job to be done then. Posted by Gill at 4:40 PM. Sometimes It's Practical: The 'Wilko's has run out of my paint' lament

http://www.sometimesitspractical.blogspot.com/2008/02/wilkos-has-run-out-of-my-paint-lament.html

Children grow up: house evolves. This is about how we tackle the practical stuff around here. Wednesday, February 6, 2008. The 'Wilko's has run out of my paint' lament. Wilko-oh-oh's has run out of my paint. They've got lots of colours. all very quaint. But the one that we need. That we've done most of our staircase with and half of one door. Which we thought we'd bought enough tins of from the half-price sale last week. Wasn't there any more. This is why I don't do poetry. Posted by Gill at 4:23 PM.

Sometimes It's Practical: Fireplace

http://www.sometimesitspractical.blogspot.com/2007/07/fireplace.html

Children grow up: house evolves. This is about how we tackle the practical stuff around here. Wednesday, July 4, 2007. This fireplace needs doing too. I want about 50-60 pretty tiles, which I'm planning to cover the exposed brickwork with, inside the wooden surround. I'll also make a 'mantle place' tiled enclosure in front and I really need to incorporate some kind of fireguard because it's in the living room, where the young children spend a lot of their time:. Ideally I'd like one of these. July 7, 200...

Sometimes It's Prudent: December 2007

http://sometimesitsprudent.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

Not too much. Not too little. Just enough. Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Well, I'm not one. But how does it happen every Christmas, that we end up needing about 3x more money than we think we have? Even more amazing is the fact that we somehow magically end up with just enough cash to cover everything. This is why I still believe in Father Christmas - I can't think of any other explanation. Sometimes It's Prudent: July 2007

http://sometimesitsprudent.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Not too much. Not too little. Just enough. Friday, July 20, 2007. Single parents to be forced back to work". There are some huge and silly assumptions in the title sentence, which I took from the thread about this news story. On one of the HE lists. The news story concerns the green paper published by DWP this week: In work, better off: next steps to full employment. Deadline: end of this month.). The government has been trying very hard to 'change hearts and minds' on the single parent issue. But I thin...

Sometimes It's Political: About Gaza

http://sometimesitspolitical.blogspot.com/2009/01/about-gaza.html

I moved the soapbox over here. Sunday, 4 January 2009. Have both blogged eloquently about this, and I've just watched America's only intelligent politician. Talking about it and other things. Well worth a look. I want to know what we can do, though? How do we stop these so-called 'pre-emptive' strikes, as Ron Paul describes them? It doesn't stop them. What will? I've read quite a bit about what's happening in Gaza and am as outraged as everyone else, but this post. Posted by Gill at 08:55. Mm well I don'...

http://sometimesitspreposterous.blogspot.com/2008/04/whats-going-on-here-then.html

This is rant corner. Wednesday, April 30, 2008. What's going on here then? Bit of snaily snogging? Edit: forgot to add this one. Same question, really, but different animal this time. Arriving at our home ed meeting today (in the LA education admin centre. We couldn't help noticing these mattress boxes in the carpark skip:. And are now all wondering . why? Posted by Gill at 6:54 PM. LOL, that's not very ranty, is it? Couldn't think where else to put it! Not enough blogs.). April 30, 2008 at 8:06 PM.

Sometimes It's Preposterous: "GILLIAN, don't hide from your free Experian credit report"

This is rant corner. Thursday, March 13, 2008. GILLIAN, don't hide from your free Experian credit report". Says today's load of aggressive spam from this supposedly reputable company. For the record, I'm not hiding from it. I just don't want it any more since I found out they 'needed' my debit card details and a monthly payment setting up in order to give me this 'free' thing. I think I might spam them back. Posted by Gill at 11:36 AM. Thank you for your email, which we received on 14 March 2008. Subject...

http://sometimesitsplantbased.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

This blog is about the finding, growing, planting, nurturing, choosing, using, cooking, preparing and ingesting of plants. Saturday, June 21, 2008. Re-post: The real free (healthy) health service - Dec 06. Today's blog post was going to be another negative rant about the NHS, specifically the new Spine database, along the lines of 'NHS Consumes Itself', because there was a piece in the newspaper this weekend about Helen Wilkinson. What of the trusting relationship between doctor and patient? But we are s...

Sometimes It's Preposterous: June 2008

http://sometimesitspreposterous.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

This is rant corner. Monday, June 16, 2008. I just want to have a very quick rant about the deliberate and cynical redefining of certain words in common usage, as I've been listening to the radio whilst working out in our field. And been feeling increasingly irritated by it. Is one that we've been hearing a lot this week, because people who are paid to be 'carers' are apparently undergoing the same fate as single parents. Work' doesn't mean work. Last but not least, poverty. So it doesn't matter what pol...

Sometimes It's Personal

This is just me, wittering on about me and some non-specific family-type stuff. Well, I've got to do it somewhere. Tuesday, 1 March 2011. My [not so secret] life ambition. I'm building a village. Making a start - however small and slow - in the field. With 'studio bedrooms' for the older children. What do I mean by 'village'? Why do I want to build one? Unless there is that deep, familial bond of love involved - ditto the care of old people. And each other! Take a village to raise a child, and to educate...

Sometimes It's Philosophical

Pondering and pontificating. Actually just talking to myself. These are the things I most need to learn and remember. Sunday, January 30, 2011. On extended family living. Someone came up with a better name for this a few years ago and I can’t remember what it was, but I’m pretty sure I blogged it at the time. OK, it’s 3G living. I touched on it by that name in this post. And in a bit more detail and in a bit of a rant back in 2007 here. First, why are we doing this? How did we manage that? There’s good c...

This blog is about the finding, growing, planting, nurturing, choosing, using, cooking, preparing and ingesting of plants. Thursday, August 2, 2012. My new planting system - all grown up! Here's the same bed at the end of May, again at the end of June, and finally at the beginning of August:. And another bed, on the same three dates:. And we've got two more like that. So the system worked: the plants grew really well in such competition with each other, and the weeds didn't get much of a look-in. And Spr...

Sometimes It's Political

I moved the soapbox over here. Sunday, 27 March 2011. A friend who works for the census. Has told me that partially. Posted by Gill at 21:29. Tuesday, 8 February 2011. I’ve always liked the philosophy of shared space. This is the part in which I’m particularly interested:. Accident figures at one junction where traffic lights were removed have dropped from thirty-six in the four years prior to the introduction of the scheme to two in the two years following it. And I can understand why, from the rare occ...
