Sound of owls screeching. Family due in this evening phoned at 5.30 pm to say they'd not be coming after all. Husband promised faithfully that he'd send a cheque for the (not inconsiderable) balance owed for their non-stay as they'd let us know far too late for us to try to re-let the rooms. Fast forward to 9.00 pm and a French family of four roll up looking for a room. No problem, we said. They looked at the room, decided they approved, and headed off to find something to eat.
