Blethers from the North: September 2011
http://www.northernblethers.co.uk/2011_09_01_archive.html
Blethers from the North. Random thoughts from Orkney: Scottish islands since 1468, previously a Norwegian earldom. Mainly about theatre, music, and that other performance art - politics. Monday, 26 September 2011. Open Email to Gov Scot Camp - November 2011. I tried to send this as email, but the address provided. Does not seem to work (yet? I also tried posting the text below as a wall post on the event facebook. Having had my enthusiasm for this approach fired by attendence at SOCITM Scotland. Will it ...

The Distance From Should To Is: Comparative law - that's the way it is
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2013/09/comparative-law-thats-way-it-is.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Thursday, 19 September 2013. Comparative law - that's the way it is. Anyone remember the riots? You know, the disturbances over a couple of nights in a few cities. A few hundred people were involved and the media was all over it. Come on, you must remember it. All night courts and massively harsh punishments delivered to make people clear that “this will not be tolerated”. Nick a bag of rice? That’ll be two years in jail. Remember it now? So what’s going on? What is the pe...

The Distance From Should To Is: June 2013
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Wednesday, 26 June 2013. 12,000 people - is that much of a problem? This is the first in a series linked posts about thousands of people being denied their rights to an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA). This isn’t merely some technicality in the implementation of a health system. Ask yourself this question, if you were detained against your will, or treated without your consent, would you want to know what was going on? People subject to compulsory powers of the M...

The Distance From Should To Is: October 2012
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Tuesday, 9 October 2012. How soon is soon? What can we learn from Jeremy Hunt’s speech today? There is so much to say on health, so much to say on social care, so many challenges ahead. And lurking in the background, Dilnot. I was surprised to hear Hunt state that the conservatives want to implement Dilnot “as soon as we are able” – it seems to give a sense of urgency. However it also leaves the door open to excuses, to barriers and to more delay....The challenge now must ...

The Distance From Should To Is: January 2014
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Wednesday, 29 January 2014. Short post, big problem. CQC have just launched their report Monitoring The Mental Health Act 2012/13. I'll be writing about this in more detail soon, but here are some headlines to consider:. 10 % of care plans don't include the least restrictive option. 27% of care plans show no involvement of the patient. 29% of care plans do not include a discharge plan. 20% of visits showed evidence of de facto detention. Other Black (6.6 times higher).

The Distance From Should To Is: July 2012
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Tuesday, 31 July 2012. All Rock, No Blackpool? I’ve been thinking a lot about the Care and Support bill and the fact that it defines advocacy as a social care service for which there may be a need. Identifying needs is important. On that note, a recent meeting relating to the draft social care bill and white paper is worth exploring. The Department of Health’s interim report on Winterbourne View. 8211; or sign up to Action for Advocacy’s 100 Words on Advocacy. Orget all of...

The Distance From Should To Is: The point of advocacy
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2013/08/something-this-important-must-be-done.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Friday, 23 August 2013. The point of advocacy. Some people have asked me why I keep banging on about advocacy. Well, imagine that you need support, or care, or housing or a GP. Now imagine that you are routinely disbelieved. Or given poorer services. That you don’t get access to a GP. Or that your physical health problem are ignored or put down to your mental health . Or imagine that you are in a care home where you are being abused by the staff. I think that's worth bangi...

The Distance From Should To Is: The Need for Care, Candour and Change
http://shouldtois.blogspot.com/2014/03/care-candour-and-change.html
The Distance From Should To Is. Wednesday, 12 March 2014. The Need for Care, Candour and Change. Talked about the poor access to healthcare for people in hospitals. No, really. So I want to pose a simple question; what hospitals are for? So three purposes of a hospital; assessment, treatment and care. So assessment, treatment and care – they’ve nailed it. Surely assessment and treatment centres should be the zenith of the care experience. Only, they're not. I first heard about Connor through a blog.

ned ludd carer: For Winterbourne View read Munroe House
http://nedluddcarer.blogspot.com/2013/01/for-winterbourne-view-read-munroe-house.html
Ned Ludd, carer. Friday, January 25, 2013. For Winterbourne View read Munroe House. Winterbourne View, the home exposed by Panorama last year, was owned by Castlebeck. The individuals abusing the residents were found guilty and went to prison. So that's all right then, isn't it? And entrepreneurs, who've put in a 'turnaround specialist'. So that should be all right shouldn't it? Well no, not if the latest allegations are true. Does it remind you of anything? I know it would be disruptive to the establish...

ned ludd carer: Cuts and rumours of cuts
http://nedluddcarer.blogspot.com/2013/01/cuts-and-rumours-of-cuts.html
Ned Ludd, carer. Saturday, January 12, 2013. Cuts and rumours of cuts. So what is the future for people with a learning disability. Despite all the trips and failures on the way, I thought we'd come a long way from the old large institutions from before the days of Care in the Community. We're into the era of independent living and personalized budgets - aren't we? Could be quite small - OK, maybe 100, but could be as small as 40 units! This would certainly keep costs down - but I seem to remember emptyi...
