Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer: Twilight in Tokyo
http://idlemonkeytrainer.blogspot.com/2011/04/twilight-in-tokyo.html
Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer. An idle monkey trainer is the devil's workshop. Tuesday, April 05, 2011. Tokyo received little direct damage from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Suburban areas, particularly Chiba seem to have been more directly affected. Rolling blackouts continue in the suburbs of the city, but the central part of Tokyo remains largely unaffected by these. Subways and trains in the city center are back nearly to their pre-earthquake schedules. This past Saturday, the park did s...

Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer: March 11 - 14, 2011

Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer. An idle monkey trainer is the devil's workshop. Monday, March 14, 2011. March 11 - 14, 2011. Just after 2:oo pm on a lovely early spring afternoon the shaking started. At first it seemed to be no more than the usual rocking, which is viewed with general nonchalance by the majority of residents. Then it kept going, and growing stronger. Concern began to creep into voiced thoughts. “Is it time to get under the desk? Aftershocks continued through Friday night, waking peop...

Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer. An idle monkey trainer is the devil's workshop. Thursday, February 04, 2010. Another Wander Through the Woods. On the final day of January, I took my hangover for a walk through part of Big Thicket National Preserve. Big Thicket is a sprawling piece of the National Park System and rather disjointed. The Kirby Nature Trail, and at least the first part of the Turkey Creek Trail and Sand Hill Loop Trail, are all well maintained and easy to follow. The Idle Monkey Trainer.

Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer. An idle monkey trainer is the devil's workshop. Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan in early May. It is hard to put into words the range of emotions and experiences one goes through during a week of recovery volunteer work in Ishinomaki, Miyagi on the northeast coast of Japan. The world watched live on television as the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami shattered towns along the coast. I won’t rehash that story here. On the night of April 30.

Thoughts of an Idle Monkey Trainer. An idle monkey trainer is the devil's workshop. Saturday, June 16, 2012. The Calm before the Storm. I was reminded recently – well, early in May – that I have a blog. It seems I have been more idle than usual. I had an intention to revisit the north of Japan to volunteer once again and see firsthand how the recovery efforts were progressing. This has not happened. Instead, I found myself recently idling in Athens, Greece for a brief time. What happens Sunday will tell ...

Kichijoji Life: August 2010

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Chapter 16 – One Tree standing (Day 19). Below is a photo of the land with the building torn down. It actually looks much bigger than I thought. And thankfully we won’t be building as big so more space for the garden. As we you can see it’s as long as 2 standard homes and the width is that of 2 smaller homes. This little maple was the only thing worth keeping. We will probably move it to another area and it will look great in the fall. We break ground on construction on Wednesday.

Kichijoji Life: Chapter 47–The Genkan ( Vestibule]

Saturday, November 19, 2011. Chapter 47–The Genkan ( Vestibule]. In the old place we rented the entry was typically a mountain of shoes, schools bags, coats, outdoor toys. Although, we still have the occasional shoe pile up, it’s definitely more manageable and we have plenty of storage for coats, miscellaneous items. Actually we have so much storage now that we’ve gotten away with not being the most organized. The sliding door has been useful in cutting down drafts. Labels: Architecture and Design. I've ...

Monday, March 21, 2011. The Show Must Go On: Spring. The house is still standing. We are safe and healthy though a bit stressed. These past 10 days have been a mixture of fear, grief, worry and hope. I’m not going to rehash what’s already been written in the media (nor comment on it). Photos below are from yesterday at a popular park near our that is popular with young families with toddlers. A beautiful day to take your first steps or play ball with Dad. Lara and the kids went on early spring break on W...

Friday, February 18, 2011. Chapter 44 - cats adjusting just fine. Cade and ruby, our two cats are finely settling into their new digs. I think last night was the first time we managed to sleep without cursing their meowing. To be fair to Cade, it's really Ruby who is most vocal. As you can see Cade has found his favorite spot. Some other views of the semi formal living area. Below is the family living where all five of us can pile in. A more casual area. Some of Lara's ikebana in the gallery. And can't s...
