Saturday, July 3, 2010. Giorno Primo - Roma - Friday July 2. We arrived almost 45 minutes earlier than expected and got our luggage without incident. We kept waiting to encounter the lines for customs and were pleassantly surprised to realize that it was just stamping of our passports and took less than five minutes! Holly and Ward slept on the plane, but Gillian just couldn't relax, nor could I, as her seatmate. I warned her that there would be an afternoon nap, and she was not too upset about that.

Of course, none of us have practiced our Italian nearly as much as we wanted to or should have. I feel like I can recognize many words (mostly for food! Gillian was suffering an earache from attempting to swim the length of the pool underwater, so I trekked to the pharmacy and got her ear drops and pain medicine. Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Tavernelle, Castiglione del Lago and Cortona - July 5. We walked with our American neighbors into the “new” part of Piegaro to the bakery. We bought bread, sfogliatella filled with Nutella and biscotti. We also chose peaches and apples. At another stall we picked out some dishtowels. The heat was worse, up to 34C today and we decided to abandon our exploration of Perugia and our picnic lunch and head home to eat our panini and go back out in the late afternoon. We had the pool to ourselves for hours and as the sky darkened and thunder rumbled, we headed out to Deruta. 8221; This time we turned the other way and got back on track. We have spent the last few months fare-watching, which resulted in some stressful moments when the airfare increased to 150% of the best I'd seen, as well as one Saturday morning when was I elated when I thought I'd found a tremendous bargain, only to realize that I had forgotten to account for one of the children! Monday, June 14, 2010. The girls are done with school next Thursday and we are then one week away from departure! Latest arrangements included confirming flights, solidifying hotels in Rome and arranging the rental car, which we are fortunate enough to be able to pick up right in our village. Thursday, July 8, 2010. Piegaro - July 7. Another afternoon that our neighbors were out and about and we had the pool to ourselves. Colleen asked if we would like to accompany her to a tasting that her friend was hosting at his agritourismo in Cittia della Pieve, one town west. They brought in all local products for their guests (plus us) to sample including local wines, meats and cheeses and honey. A homemade ginger and fruit tart finished off the evening. Sunday, June 27, 2010. The suitcases are down from the attic, sweet Ward did all the laundry yesterday, and the packing piles have been started in the living room. Ward visited Chase bank this week and changed dollars to euros (great rate of $1.28! I'm gearing up to print out all our essential information (tickets, hotel reservations, directions) and link to the rest here. We're finding chargers, USB. Cables, adaptors and batteries. The girls have finally asked to listen to the Italian language lessons.
