Delving into a prizeworthy past. Back in January this year I wrote a post lamenting the lack of Akutagawa prize winning stories available in English translation. Suffice to say that someone has done the digging and produced a fantastic reference list of how to get your hands on these past greats - check out their blog here. Wednesday, 15 September 2010. Another Self Portrait もう一つの自画像. Recently I haven't been posting that much, and for that I apologise. Reasons are, my wife one month ago finally came over to the UK, after a two month delay, and at the same time we moved into a new apartment in Queen's Park, London. So I've been a little preoccupied - enjoying the good life, dining out, walking about the big city, and catching up in general. Self Portrait, oil, 8 x 10 inches. Links to this post. Old G Dawg's Labyrinth: Structuralism
http://gdawgslabyrinth.blogspot.com/2010/12/structuralism.html
Thursday, 9 December 2010. Murakami short story from the Spider Monkey collection]. Please don't ask me anything about Roppongi. Concerning the area of Roppongi, I have absolutely nothing I can teach you. If I have any kind of business there (and naturally, if I didn't have business there, I wouldn't go) I always alight at the Roppongi train station. In that instant of exiting the train, I am already confused. Is it Kamiyacho that is Roppongi? Or is this Roppongi? Which one is the Defense Agency? Within ...

Old G Dawg's Labyrinth: February 2010

Wednesday, 24 February 2010. Nihon Distractions and Apollinaire. Surfing the great interweb, I came across old Nihon Distractions. Today, and I read a great post. About Ishikawa Takuboku and a book of poetry he wrote, On Knowing Oneself Too Well. While reading the review, and in particular the sections from Ishikawa's poem about smoking, I was put in mind of a poem by Apollinaire, Hôtel. I tried searching for Oliver Bernard. My room resembles a cage,. The sun puts his arm through the window. Junior High,...

Old G Dawg's Labyrinth: June 2010
http://gdawgslabyrinth.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, 20 June 2010. The three following translations I have taken again from Haruki Murakami's collection of ultra short stories, Night of the Spider Monkey. I chose these three specifically because they all contain the character of Noboru Watanabe. Of course, this is a name Murakami uses quite freely in his writing, and I don't think they are all supposed to be the same person, even if they do share a name. I translated from the same collection.]. As Noboru Watanabe repaired the drainage pipe on the s...

Dokushojin: 告白 Kokuhaku (Confessions) by 湊かなえ Kanae Minato
http://dokushojin.blogspot.com/2012/02/kokuhaku-confessions-by-kanae-minato.html
A journey of a thousand books starts with a single page. Sunday, February 26, 2012. 告白 Kokuhaku (Confessions) by 湊かなえ Kanae Minato. Wow" That was the first thought I had after finishing this book. I had read books in which the same event was shown from multiple perspectives before, but never one quite so dark. To tell the truth, it wasn't an easy read. And I'm not talking about the Japanese here). There was a dark, foreboding atmosphere which filled all the pages . It wasn't quite like a horror novel, an...
