Greener Ground: 6/10/12 - 6/17/12

Sunday, June 10, 2012. Just a quick update as not much is going on in the garden and my business is really picking up now like it does every year when it starts raining. Since my Colorado Rose potatoes did so poorly I decided to try again with some red potatoes that began sprouting from the grocery store. I cut the sprouting eyes off of them before cooking,. The sweet potatoes are growing real well. They should be ready around the end of July. Last year grubs destroyed most of my sweet potatoes&#...Veget...

Wednesday, January 16, 2013. January 15, 2013. It's been a while since the last update but that doesn't mean things haven't been going on. I've been planting and harvesting a few things but the important thing is I finally got my beds finished! Now I can concentrate on growing food without looking at pallets of concrete blocks and compost needing to be moved and built into beds. A shot across the new beds I finished building last month. Next we have some Celebrity Tomatoes purchased from Lowe's. When...

Saturday, March 2, 2013. So here we are at the beginning of March and now it feels like it should in February. But that is not stopping the garden from growing. The nice thing about the cold air is that the bugs aren't so active. I did have an infestation of caterpillars on my tomatoes but the Monterey insect spray took care of them. I planted a couple Green Bell Pepper plants along with some Pink Beauty Radishes. The radishes are supposed to be a mild tasting variety. Next we have the Celebrity Tomatoes...

Saturday, February 23, 2013. Feb 23 and we're cooking. A quick update with a recipe I just can't get enough of. My wife got me started on stuffed Jalapenos but one thing I dislike is spicy food. They were kind of addicting but the heat I could do without. Some tmes one would be particularly hot and that would end it for me. I know I'm a whimp but that is just how it is. So what do we do with a bowl of them? 1 lb pkg of Tennessee Pride mild sausage. Enough peppers to use up the mixture. It says to put one...

Saturday, October 20, 2012. Just wanted to post some pics I took this morning before I get back to work preparing more beds. First here is a pumpkin vine with a couple pumpkins growing :. Next we have the Red kale. Two of the plants have died. This is why I always grow a few extras so I will transplant two of them into this bed this evening. Here is my broccoli and cabbage bed. I thinned them out this morning. Any day now I will be picking some beans. Here are the Royalty Purple beans. The first harvest ...

Greener Ground: Mid November update
http://greenerground.blogspot.com/2013/11/mid-november-update.html
Sunday, November 17, 2013. A quick update today. One quick shot of cool air and it's back to being hot for this time of year. At least it is not too hot to grow and things are coming along. The peppers haven't done too much yet. A few Fooled You Jalapenos and finally a California Wonder Pepper is fruiting. With the wind being pretty strong lately the peppers have taken the brunt of it and they have been beat up. Here is the next crop of green beans. They are the same variety as was in the eggplant be...

Sunday, October 7, 2012. The Carambola tree is just busting out with blooms I even found a couple fruit hiding up inside it. We like these and since they cost $1.99 each at the local Publix this tree already paid for itself after the first 10 I picked. Here is the pumpkin vine. You can see the damage the pickleworms do to the leaves. Then they burrow into the flowers and any fruit that begin to form already have a worm inside which destroys the fruit. Here is a future cucumber in it's infancy. Here are t...

Wednesday, October 30, 2013. The first bed up contains the pepper plants. I removed the shade cloth now and they seem to be doing fine. An Avocado tree shades them until the afternoon so they are not getting all day sun which seems to be too much. The two plants on the left are Fooled You hybrid Jalapenos which have no heat. I love them stuffed with cream cheese and sausage but did not like the heat from regular Jalapenos. The rest are California Wonder Bell Peppers. My Black Beauty Eggplant are growing ...

Sunday, February 10, 2013. Potato progress and other niceties! Well it's February 10th here and feeling more like Spring every day. Though it has been cooler than last year we still didn't get any freezing weather at all. In anticipation of lots of frost I delayed some seed starting and now wish I would have gone on and started them. We did have one day with a very very light dusting of frost but I don't think that really counts for much. The Pak Choi has really taken off along with the Brussels Sprouts&...
