The worst sentence ever: “Mistakes were made” | A Readers Feast
https://areadersfeast.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/the-worst-sentence-ever-mistakes-were-made
Writing and reading are a feast for the mind. The worst sentence ever: “Mistakes were made”. July 25, 2013. Strip out adverbs. Third step? That’s a trade secret. Anyway, I highlighted some wisdom from Stephen King in my blog recently. He once wrote that the use of passive voice is a sign of a timid and insecure writer. I absolutely agree with him. This sentence certainly doesn’t explain it. Wikipedia has a helpful list of historical uses of the sentence. 8220;Mistakes were made” is a slippery phras...

A meditation on women in fantasy and scifi | A Readers Feast
https://areadersfeast.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/a-meditation-on-women-in-fantasy-and-scifi
Writing and reading are a feast for the mind. A meditation on women in fantasy and scifi. June 25, 2013. I read a short story this week by a well-respected science fiction and fantasy author that had five characters — four men and one woman. The physical description of the one female character started with “high-breasted.” Not her hair color or eye color. Not her complexion. Just “high-breasted.”. And Mary Robinette Kowal. Chuck Wendig has written a whole series of posts. The issue has been percolating i...
Why the love? Give your characters a reason to want each other | A Readers Feast
https://areadersfeast.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/why-the-love-give-your-characters-a-reason-to-want-each-other
Writing and reading are a feast for the mind. Give your characters a reason to want each other. July 24, 2013. Writing about relationships — whether romantic or not — in fiction is hard, but I think you can make it a little easier if you think about that relationship as a character. I recently read “Wormwood is also a Star,” a novella by Andy Stewart. That appeared in the. Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. It is an inventive and enjoyable story, part murder mystery and part romance. Although I...
Three lessons learned from Stephen King’s “On Writing” | A Readers Feast
https://areadersfeast.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/three-lessons-learned-from-stephen-kings-on-writing
Writing and reading are a feast for the mind. Three lessons learned from Stephen King’s “On Writing”. July 11, 2013. Is much more of a memoir than I anticipated. I expected it to be more prescriptive, like many of the books on writing that I’ve read. But King had a different lesson in mind. He decided to show how his life had shaped his writing, and vice versa. King does offer some instruction on writing in the latter half of the book. I took away three key lessons from it. I’m an editor as well as...

Thursday, August 8, 2013. The Life and Times of Michael K by J. M. Coetzee. Sunday, August 4, 2013. Coraline by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean. Tells the story of Coraline, who trades her family for an empty mirror family, and then must decide how to get her real family back. It's a nice story of persistence and the substance of things, but I just didn't like it as well as The Graveyard Book. Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively. Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin. This collection of stories. Covers...

For those of you haven't heard of this book or don't know what it's about, here is the blurb:. How far should she go for freedom? The subject mater is what initially attracted me to this book. It had also received quite favou...
Book Reviews and Short Story Links
Book Reviews and Short Story Links. Table Manners for Monsters. Tabitha and Todd had a tea party and a bunch of monsters showed up. They showed up uninvited at the front door and rang the doorbell over and over and over until she answered the door. They didn't wipe their feet when they came into the house and tracked mud everywhere down the hall. They rushed into Tabitha's room and jumped on her bed that she had just made until they broke it. Where they didn't flush the toilet! Which was quite rude!

Terrible Leaders Divide us With Fear and Prejudice. In 1990s Rwanda, the ruling Hutu government started a propaganda campaign against the minority Tutsi eth...

Friday, November 26, 2010. A Pilgrimage to Rome. Constantine became Emperor of Rome when he defeated the Emperor Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. Constantine's mother and sister were Christians and after his victory, Constantine converted to Christianity. In 313 AD, he issued the Edict of Milan, legalizing Christianity.
