Abroad in Chile

Wednesday, July 14, 2004. Well I'm actually back home now, but I never posted about my last few weeks, so I'll do that now and then talk about reentry. First, San Pedro. It was an absolute blast. I don't know if all deserts are the same, but the Atacama was like nothing I've ever seen before. The people were all really nice, and the town of San Pedro was very cute and had great food. I went with Rachel and Steph and we had a lot of fun together and got a along really well. As the sun was coming up:.

Abroad in Chile

http://www.lizinchile.blogspot.com/2004_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 28, 2004. Well I'm in my host family's home! It's really more of a host woman. her name is Marcela, and she has 2 children, one of whom lives in Canada and the other (the daughter) lives nearby here in Santiago and has 2 kids, a boy and a girl. I am so excited because she has internet! Not dial-up either - it's sort of like DSL I think. So I get to use the computer at night when she's not using it. It's strange using a Spanish keyboard and Spanish Windows XP though. It was fun hanging ...

Thursday, June 24, 2004. And old one of the volcano that I got from Leela, posting now anyway because it's really neat:. Note the giant cross on the hill. At the pisco factory. We think they might have actually been porpoises. At the Casa Rosada. View outside our hotel room. View of the mine. View of the old mining town from inside one of the old housing buildings. Me looking ridiculous going into the copper mine. The building at Cerro Santa Lucía. Girl on the street who was waving to us. The only except...

Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Posted by Liz @ 9:58 PM. Tuesday, March 30, 2004. My trip to southern Chile was awesome this weekend! Then that night we went to the termas, the natural hot springs. They actually pump the water from the springs to manmade rocky pit things, and you can stay there for up to 3 hours. It was a like a hot tub basically, but some of the pools were a lot hotter than a hot tub. It felt really nice after hiking up the volcano and helped my swollen ankles and wouded knees! Monday, March...

Tuesday, April 27, 2004. The COPA trip to La Serena was really fun. It was a long bus ride, but I got a lot of reading for my classes done, and it was fun hanging out with all the COPA people. I also really enjoyed hanging out with my friends this weekend. I haven't had a group of close female friends since the middle of high school. And while I like all of my male friends (really I do, so no offense! It's really nice to have some girls to hang out with. Posted by Liz @ 5:23 PM. Wednesday, April 21, 2004.

Tuesday, May 18, 2004. I guess I'm a bit behind! Academic stuff has been really stressful for the past couple of weeks, so I just didn't get around to posting, alas. A few weeks ago I also experienced my first Chilean earthquake! Then I realized it was an earthquake and went back to sleep. It was pretty strong though. I heard later that it registered at about a 5 in Santiago and around 6 further south near Concepción. Posted by Liz @ 4:51 PM. Wednesday, May 05, 2004. Posted by Liz @ 12:51 PM.

jun b'ey chïk: Line dancing with Mayans

http://lizinguatemala.blogspot.com/2008/07/line-dancing-with-mayans.html

Lunes, 28 de julio de 2008. Line dancing with Mayans. While we were in Panajachel, every night we had a "culture night" planned. Sometimes the teachers were in charge, sometimes the students. The idea was cultural exhange, and events ranged from dancing, singing, showing pictures of New Orleans post-Katrina, showing pictures of an archeological site, making Navajo tacos, giving a summary of a Mayan epigraphy conference, and so forth. I've got that pandemonium shirt! 28 de julio de 2008, 8:30. A grid line...

Viernes, 6 de julio de 2007. Today was my last day of class. It was a fun class. we learned animals, so all the instructors had to act out different animals, and it was hysterical. My teacher from the first two weeks had to be a dog, and he crawled around barking, and then he went over to someone, lifted his leg, and pretended to pee on them! I seriously about died laughing. jun b'ey chïk: Learning Kaqchikel is serious business

http://lizinguatemala.blogspot.com/2008/07/learning-kaqchikel-is-serious-business.html

Sábado, 5 de julio de 2008. Learning Kaqchikel is serious business. As you can clearly see in the above picture, our daily classroom environment is highly serious. We don't laugh or make jokes at all. Everyone stays politely seated. Nope, no fun at all. Some of you may remember my post from last year about the day we learn animals. Since it's all communicative, this requires acting out the animals while repeating the vocabulary words. And as I posted last year, one of the funniest parts. I did manage to ...

http://lizinguatemala.blogspot.com/2008/07/market-day.html

Lunes, 21 de julio de 2008. Here is the view from our hotel in Tecpan when we arrived:. And here is the view from or hotel on market day (during which it was actually sunny and warmish, certainly an oddity for Tecpan. On Friday we went to the market in Sololá. Waiting to head back down the hill to Panajachel. You'll notice that the men in Sololá still use their traje, something that is not very common, as women are usually the ones who preserve the Mayan dress in daily life. It is the best.

Miércoles, 11 de julio de 2007. I thought I'd post some picture for those still listening, now that I have my camera cord available. First one from right outside our door). This is pretty much your typical Antigua cafe:. Note the volcano on the far left -half covered in a cloud - smoking! This was the day after the 6.7-on-the-richter-scale earthquake. From the big cross on the hill overlooking Antigua. Lake Atitlán (on the way to Chichicastenango). Woman in the market at Chichi with a chicken on her lap.

http://lizinguatemala.blogspot.com/2008/07/tecpn-and-iximche.html

Martes, 8 de julio de 2008. The past two days in Tecpán. Have been remarkably charming. The town itself has a population of around 60,000 people, and it's just outside the archaeological site of Iximche'. Which was the Kaqchikel capital when the Spanish arrived to Guatemala. (By the way, Iximche', which translates literally as Corn Tree, is breadfruit - for those of you Lusophonites who may know about that. There is a large tree in the center of the city that is THE Iximche'). The food sounds delicious!

http://lizinguatemala.blogspot.com/2008/07/intro-to-panajachel.html

Miércoles, 16 de julio de 2008. Due to popular demand, I'm posting an entry although I don't have pictures ready to post yet from the end of our Tecpán trip. There's not much to say really, but I wanted to post some pictures of market day. We have now migrated to Panajachel on Lake Atitlán. Pana itself is mostly a tourist town or a point of departure for other towns around the lake, some of which we have explored already. We went to San Pedro. So little by little I'm learning things. I know the resemblance is striking.*) Sometimes other students will wear a thinner huipil untucked with a. But then this weekend I was talking to another student who's been coming here for a couple of years, and she told me about how she never bought any traje until she had to go to linguistics fieldwork in small towns. She discovered that wearing the.

Not talking, not writing, just sitting and staring. Seriously. Then she would say something along the lines of I already know so much that she doesn't know what to teach me, so what do I want to learn? Not exactly a question that a student can answer easily. Yes, it's exactly the same but with Spanish-speakers). So I've been ...

Monday, June 13, 2011. Days 108 - 115. the ugliest rings in the world. My very last week in Bolivia! I was desperate to finish everything and do as much as I possibly could. In His name the nations will put their hope! Matthew 12:21

Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Was quite an interesting day. This morning we went to a city about 45 minutes from Campinas and gave two school meetings. The students (all highschoolers) responded well. Brandon has been a bit hit with the ladies down here. Considering he is several inches taller than me, the girls don't seem to care that he's 15. That made for some interesting situations at the school this afternoon and evening when the team went back for more meetings. Tomorrow after lunch we will set off on ...
