The Disappearing Desk | Boatbird

https://boatbird.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/the-disappearing-desk

What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa. I knew when I embarked on this watery lifestyle in a 47ft x 7ft metal tube, I would have to make the odd sacrifice. (That’s doing without something, not slaughtering a child in a white frock on an altar at midnight.). More recently, I’ve hankered after a desk/table to work at…. I’m lucky that John is good in the making things department so I designed a desk that works in the boat and he has made it. John likes to work in 3D models and, ha...

What If…? | Boatbird

https://boatbird.wordpress.com/2015/04/16/what-if

What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa. This age-old question has once again popped into my mind after reading a letter in the April edition of. Which was written with reference to the C&RT’s new rules for boaters without a home mooring. There are not enough home moorings available in my area of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal for a quarter of these…. Good question. And in no way limited to the Leeds and Liverpool. Frankly, it seems such a waste when they could be utilised for th...

The Mechanic’s Car | Boatbird

https://boatbird.wordpress.com/2015/03/16/the-mechanics-car

What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa. The Mechanic’s Car. Into Google it brings up images of well maintained cars with bonnets up, revealing shiny clean engines being lovingly tended by smart, clean, boiler-suited men wielding equally clean and shiny tools. Still, as long as you and I know where I’m coming from on this one, the rest of this post will make sense. Possibly. I’ve done the. All through the winter, with its mud and mess, I’ve happily. Believed that there really wa...

Riverbank Robbery | Boatbird

https://boatbird.wordpress.com/2015/05/20/riverbank-robbery

What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa. I was busy with the internet ablutions earlier; catching up with the e mails/favourite blogs/facebook and so on and came across a post from blogging buddies of mine on NB Tumbleweed. They wrote of a boat trip to Ely, which evoked memories of the time, five years ago now, when John and I had just started out on our mission to move Hobo from Hartford Marina to destinations unknown. We’d unplugged…. Negotiated that awkward reverse…. At silly...

nb Poppy: November 2011

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Sunday, 13 November 2011. Yesterday we wanted to check out the mooring situation north of Chirk so we walked over the aqueduct, through the tunnel and through the cutting as far as the marina. View from the aqueduct across the valley under the railway viaduct,. The mist is just rising off the trees. The Chirk Aqueduct is the 'other' aqueduct's poor relation but we like it. The imposing Chirk Tunnel entrance. A frea...

nb Poppy: March 2012

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Saturday, 31 March 2012. Last Thursday we left the countryside behind and cruised into Greater Manchester, we had booked into Stretford Marina for a long weekend and it was just as well we'd booked as being a small marina it was just about full, it's handy to visit Bek and family who live just round the corner and extremely reasonable at £5 a night inc electric. On Thursday night. Or The Tank as the locals call it).

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Thursday, 30 June 2011. Just one of those weeks. After a 7.30am start we got to Reading Tesco moorings for 9am and by 10am I was collecting my repeat prescription from the Post Office, so far so good but when I got to Boots I found a problem with the script as one of my regular meds wasn't on the list and I had taken my last tablet in the morning ( cutting it fine, I know! I went to the NHS walk in centre as. I thi...

nb Poppy: July 2011

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Sunday, 31 July 2011. Though I have since read somewhere that it has been practice for years as due to leaking lock walls the lock cottages basements would flood if locks left full. Again we had the train noise but it does seem to ease off during the night or else I was so whacked I'd have slept through anything. So Friday we got cracking at 8am determined to find a spot for the weekend, after a couple of locks we ...

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Friday, 23 September 2011. Time to move on, the cupboards need restocking so we were Tamworth bound,. Leaving our mooring on a glorious morning. The 1st day of Autumn and the leaves are definitely on the turn. Looking back at the M42, we have driven over it many times,. It's nice to be cruising under it this time. The Glascote locks were busy, no water wasted as it was one up one down. Friday, September 23, 2011.

Riverside Island Birdlife | NB Tumbleweed No5

http://www.nbtumbleweed.com/riverside-island-birdlife

When we chose Riverside Island Marina as our new home, one of the great appeals for us was the amount of birdlife. Not only are there loads of birds around the marina but right next to the marina is the Isleham Washes reserve. Isleham Washes has now gone quiet and most of the waders seem to have left since the water levels went up but I am sure I will add more birds to my list during the year. Celebration Day | NB Tumbleweed No5

http://www.nbtumbleweed.com/celebration-day

It was Angela’s 50. Birthday on Saturday. I know I shouldn’t mention a ladies age, but I think its allowed for a milestone one. Her parents came down to stay for the weekend, though they decided to stay in the local B&B rather than on the boat. We had been planning a trip out on the boat on the Saturday with them but it was very windy and so we headed off to Ely instead. Fortunately on Sunday the wind had eased down a bit so we finally managed our boat trip. As it’s quite a tight turn to get in and o...

nb Poppy: Flaming June ??

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2012/06/flaming-june.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Friday, 22 June 2012. When we crossed the Ribble Link in April the weather was dreadful, wind and rain, never mind we said, it'll be a better crossing when we go back down in June. Pah! We are sat here near Lea Town, a couple of miles or so from the link, it's blowing a gale and has not stopped raining all day. Soona is not impressed. Friday, June 22, 2012. Please feel free to comment or to just say hi! Captain Aha...

Percy: The bike.... remember the bike ?

http://nbpercy.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-bike-remember-bike.html

A chronicle of ownership of NB Percy and life in general. For the boater and the gongoozler alike. Friday, 31 July 2015. The bike. remember the bike? We did not make Colditz sadly, ill health (not mine) and ill health of family saw fit to kill that trip. Time was spent as detailed in other blogs in getting Percy ready for the pain cruise and paint job. So my bike was calling one Wednesday evening in July after getting back from down south. Just a short post to remind myself I did ride a little in 2015.

http://nbpoppy.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

An everyday tale of our life as liveaboards on our narrowboat with our cats Soona and Sid. Saturday, 18 February 2012. Llangollen, 12 days left. Yes well I know posts have been a bit thin on the ground, we have just been plodding along in semi-hibernation mode added to which Mark has had a stinker of a cold. I am half expecting to get it as well but it's been 2 weeks and no sign yet, fingers crossed. On the balcony enticed us in for a spot of lunch,. Hey only have a limited menu (tiny food prep area!

Boatbird | What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa

What's going on in Boatbird Land – Narrowboating and South Africa. Good name for a boatie blog. But this isn’t that; it’s just what I do at this time of year – me and millions of others I suspect – reflect on the year that’s passing. I hate to be negative but 2016 hasn’t been a great year, one way or another. I lost a brother. Countless celebrities lives ended – we lost such a lot of talent in 2016, many of whom were great inspirations of mine. I suppose we tend to see them as immortal. Then there was th...

BoatBird

Life at wing afloat. Friday, 22 May 2009. What a gorgeous day off! I found two new regular clients for my cleaning today! Then our friend Piano Dave rang us to say he was down near the boat and we arranged to meet up. We gave him some of the tablets that David no longer needs for his prostate- saving Dave some money and giving us a feel-good feeling about helping a friend. It was so nice to lie on a sandy beach rather than a pebbly one- I even went for a swim which was lovely- first swim of the year!

Wednesday, March 14, 2018. 📖 #18 Draycote and Brandon. Wednesday 14th March 2018. After dipping the Red-throated Diver. Yesterday I couldn't have timed my arrival better at Draycote Water this morning as Richard Mays and Dave Cox had just sent out the word of a summer plumaged Black-necked Grebe. Just off the sailing club! Was still around Farborough Bank but I didn't stop at the play area for the long staying Hawfinch. Drifting over East Marsh Pool! Brandon Marsh has returned to some normality after th...
