Here, there, sand everywhere: April 2012
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Wednesday, 18 April 2012. Irkutsk, Lake Baikal and Ulan Ude. Rather grim train ride, managd to be sat opposite an old babushka who constantly smacked her lips and snored like a truck, horrendous. Perhaps riding in platzkart isn't the way to get that stereotypical vodka fueled train ride everyone dreams of having, let alone expects. Second class coupe carriages await when crossing international borders so we'll see, but I won't hold my breath. Out on the ice, Lake Baikal.

Here, there, sand everywhere: October 2012
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Friday, 26 October 2012. Knowing I would be back home for a few months before heading off again, I went ahead and booked a short break away in Krakow for myself and my mum. Taking advantage of cheap weekday flights and lucking out with decent hostel accommodation managed to keep costs down too. Rynek Glowny (the square). The following morning proved to be rather drab weather but that wasn't going to deter us considering how short our visit was. Again, we took the direct ...

Here, there, sand everywhere: May 2012

Here, there, sand everywhere. Monday, 21 May 2012. Having alreadly been to KL years ago, I figured there was no real need to go seeing all the sights all over again, and rather, spend this time sampling all the delightful treats available around every street corner. China's food was delicious, but there's nothing like getting your mitts around all that cheap Malay/ Indian food. Poolside at the Prince. Petronas Twin Towers, KL. Anyway, once on the boat with the wind in my face clearing the cob webs and fe...

Here, there, sand everywhere: January 2013
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Thursday, 17 January 2013. Fairfield Horseshoe in the Lake District, Cumbria. One thing both Tim and I wanted to do was get some walking in. Given the options up north we were spoilt for choice and decided on the Lake District. Given how unpredictable the weather had been we figured we'd just drive up and see what it was like when we arrived. Walking north through the town centre of Ambleside, we saw a few other hikers but it looked like it would be a quiet day out in the hi...

Here, there, sand everywhere: June 2012
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Monday, 25 June 2012. Volcanoes, lakes and temples, Java, Indonesia. As always, there is someone willing to help you find accommodation or book a tour with and this small town of Ketapang was no exception. Four pound accommodation, okay. Reduced price volcano trip, excellent. Even approaching high season, some of the sights out here fall victim to the popularity of the Komodo dragons on the Flores islands and the obvious delights of Bali. Doesn't look too heavy. There are tw...

Here, there, sand everywhere: July 2013
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Monday, 29 July 2013. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. View of Lake Atitlan from San Pedro. From the north of Guatemala, most roads lead to Guatemala City, this most populated city in Central America and something of a crime hotspot, or so everyone tells me since arriving in Belize. Hiking San Pedro Volcano. Location: Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala. Saturday, 27 July 2013. Lagoons and Caves of Semuc Champey, Guatemala. From Tikal, if you don't have a whole lot of time to spare or you wa...

Here, there, sand everywhere: August 2012
http://grattanmaslin.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Here, there, sand everywhere. Sunday, 26 August 2012. After some sleep and a hard earned breakfast it was time to explore the first of many cities on the itinerary that have a choice of a temple, a fort or a palace as the main viewing interest. In this case, Amritsar has the Golden Temple, which happens to be the Sikh's most important and revered shrine. Many people, regardless of religion undertake a pilgrimage to this site where they are afforded bread and board for their troubles. Inside the temple, t...

Thursday, 25 September 2014. The location is a super casual up and coming street near other trendy 'Friends of Ham' and 'Tapped' food and drink hubs, satiating around the new Leeds Trinity shopping centre.
