Typically inhabits rough grassland, where tall grasses can be found, and may occur on roadside verges, beside hedgerows, on overgrown downland, in woodland clearings and along woodland rides. It is often found basking on vegetation, or making its short, fast, buzzing flights amongst tall grass stems. The Essex Skipper, Thymelicus lineola. This area is black and in T. sylvestris. The gull roost was well lit and contained 100 Commons and a Med Gull. Frankly, I was too cold and sore to sit there any longer and drove home; both Ring-billed Gulls were on GoingBirding as soon as I got in so presumably came in to roost as I was driving away! Tuesday, 21 October 2014. Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia). Although females have been seen egg-laying, neither larvae nor pupae have been found in the wild except in the Channel Islands, where larvae were found in 1950. Larvae were again found in 1951 and 1957. However, in 1945, 25 individuals were recorded at Portreath in Cornwall, suggesting that a migrant female had deposited her eggs in the vicinity and that this concentration of adults were her offspring. We started an extremely cold day at the East Sussex end of Scotney Gravel Pit and soon picked out 53 feral Barnacle Geese. Grazing on the bank. Amongst them were at least four other geese, which looked similar to either Blue Snow Geese or Emperor Geese, or maybe they are hybrids. Whatever they were, they were certainly not wild.
