What I Ate Today - A blog of tasty gourmet recipes, grownup lunchbox ideas, food shops, recipe book reviews and restaurants, cafes and pub recommendations

We are five friends who often talk about food, cook for each other, share tips and recipes and eat out together. When we got to the point where we were sending each other pictures of food we'd created we decided it was definitely time to set up a blog. Happy eating!

Pretentious title. unpretentious food. Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Fennel and Red Cabbage Slaw. I love how colorful this easy slaw looks on the plate. I served this for dinner as a side dish, but it would be delicious as a lunch with some grilled sliced chicken or something thrown in as well. If you haven't used fennel much, this is a good recipe to try it in - its slightly licorice crunch really complements the tang of the red cabbage. 1 large fennel bulb, sliced very thinly. 1/3 cup olive oil. I'm a cra...

See No Evil, Bristol. Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at 19:08. Last weekend, Bristol hosted, See No Evil. One of the most exciting art projects I’ve seen. Loads of world leading street artists took over one of the city centre’s grey, run down streets and decorated it with some fantastic graffiti. I work a couple of minutes walk away from where it took place so in the days leading up to it I popped up there to watch the street transform and photograph the artists at work. http://genuinefoodie.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Pretentious title. unpretentious food. Sunday, September 19, 2010. I had an Event to go to last Friday that involved hanging around a bunch of people I barely knew and Making Nice. I don't do either of these things well, especially recently, when I've been most comfortable hiding as far away from Other People as humanly possible. When confronted with an Event of this nature, I tend to go into hyper-cook mode ("Hey! But I left out the gooseberry relish nonsense in favor of a schmear of zahatar. Reduce the...

Pretentious title. unpretentious food. Monday, August 30, 2010. Oh, hummus has been done, you say! EVERYONE knows how to make hummus! And not so much with the lemon, so I adjust accordingly. It amazes me that hummus has been made for many centuries - and still is being made - without the benefit of food processors. If you feel passionately that hummus should be ground out the old-fashioned way, with a mortar and pestle, then I will admire your powerful arm muscles and smile ingratiatingly. Whiz for&#8230...

Pretentious title. unpretentious food. Friday, October 15, 2010. I don't always like Bon Appetit. Magazine - the recipes tend to be over-inflated with too many steps, ingredients that aren't easy to track down (at least in North Yorkshire, England), and (strangely) weird short-cuts like using pre-packaged or processed foods. It's like their test kitchen doesn't exist on a normal plane of existence - or their editor takes naps at inappropriate times. The recipe for Double-Lemon Thumbprint Scones. Whisk fl...

What I Ate Today | …and what happened next

What I Ate Today. 8230;and what happened next. July 23, 2015. I’m not a laugh out loud kind of person. Regularly, I smile, giggle a little to myself, but rarely do I break out in laugh out loud kind of way. Yes, I think things are funny, hell, half of my work centers around comedy. It’s not that I don’t have a sense of humor, it’s just the way I express it. I literally spit out my meal… spinach and sunflower seeds sputtered across my desk. What is this thing! July 20, 2015. What I Ate Where

What I Ate Where. Wednesday, April 3, 2013. I say, realizing as I speak that it's not really an explanation. It's been six months. One walks away knowing that it's how hot sweet things can get that's burned them. We were both broke at Valentine's Day, so you brought me an ice cream flavor that I liked and you didn't, and Doritos, which seemed inexplicable to me until you said, I remember you telling me you liked them as a kid. I said. But I eat them anyway. What I Ate Where. Monday, April 1, 2013. This e...
